Diet for Parrots
By Jonathan Pitts | Pet Nutrition | Unrated

Most people believe that feeding the parrots with seeds is just enough. This is mainly due to lack of enough research regarding feeding the birds or about nutritional facts of birds. This article provides some help on diet for parrots.

Generally, people feed parrots and other birds with a variety of seeds. But, it is not sufficient to meet their nutritional demands. It results in development of various deficiencies in them especially vitamin and calcium. It also results in increased fat deposition, which is not good for the health of the birds. Worst part is that even if you try to feed some nutritious diet for the birds, they are very choosy and pick the seeds only. Some bird species are very selective and prefer to have only certain types of seeds.

The increased concern of the bird lovers towards the health of the birds resulted in the development of formulated diets for parrots. These diets are prepared with the help of variety of fruits and vegetables which help the parrots to get all the required nutrition. These formulated diets are available as small crumbles that just resemble the seeds. However, if you have raised your parrot for a very long time with seeds, then get ready to take the pains of shifting it into formulated diet. In such cases, you can take the help of the veterinarian.

Some bird lovers complain that their parrots are not very active after shifting to the formulated diet as they were earlier when they were fed seeds. This is mainly due to the fact that birds do not receive enough stimulation by feeding on the formulation diets. Hence, it is recommended to restrict the extent of formulated diet to only 50 to 60 percent of the overall diet. You can consider feeding the parrots the food they love in addition to the formulated diet. A great variety of foods are available. Select the ones that best fits your parrot. You can offer seed biscuits that are made from a variety of seeds.

Apart from the regular balanced diet, you can find weight management diet. This is very helpful for overweight parrots to get them back to shape and to become active. You can even use vitamin supplements now and then to treat any vitamin deficiencies. To meet the calcium requirements, you can offer yogurt to the parents now and then. Some bird lovers who love their birds offer cooked foods such as corn.

Some people take great care of feeding the parrots but forget about the cleaning process. If you are feeding your parrot with fresh fruits, then make sure that you remove foods from the cage after sometime as they get spoiled very easily. This would spoil the health of the birds. Same is the case with cooked foods. If you have given yogurt to the parrot, then it should not be left in the cage for more than an hour.

Parrots that are taken great care by providing the essential diet rich in all the nutrients breed well and present healthy little ones as a gift for you.
