Teaching a Parrot to Talk
By Jonathan Pitts | Training | Unrated

Many people thought that dogs are man’s best friend but this can also be called for your parrot. A pet parrot can cuddle you, do some tricks to make you happy, a very good company, and even talk if you want. Parrots are not born with this kind of ability but you can teach them to be able to learn some simple phrases. Training a parrot can be hard at first and requires a lot of patience, but when your parrot utters his first word your hardship is instantly rewarded by joy. Since an average parrots can live up to 60 years old the words you teach to them will remain almost half of your life. Think first before teaching your parrot about bad phrases. You parrot might keep on repeating this bad phrase even if you think it is not funny.

• It is better to buy a parrot that is newly out of his mothers nest. But, you can also train an old parrot if you purchased an old one.

• Create a normal routine with your parrot. These routines may include feeding, cleaning its cage, and playing with your parrot.

• Speak some normal phrases while doing things for his needs. For example, when you feed your parrot you say the "yummy, this taste good". By doing this your parrot will get used to this phrases.

• Set some schedule just for training each day. You can choose between 10 to 15 minutes training everyday. It is important to choose the place where you can train your parrot quietly. This can avoid sudden distraction that can affect your parrot’s concentration. If you have kids, instruct them not to play with the parrot while you are in the middle of training.

• In the first session try saying simple words and phrases. One to two words are enough for the first to three sessions. If the parrot just responds with a sound give him some treat and praise them. These can help to make the parrot feel that you like what he is doing.

• Just continue with a one word phrase. Patience is important as this may take around weeks or even months before he can utter the word. Once your parrot repeats the word, just move on for another word. The second word will be much easier than the first one.

The most important thing to remember is you should not forget to reward the parrot for every good deed he does. Animal’s nature is to respond quickly when certain rewards are given especially when it comes to their owners. You can give them some fresh fruits like grapes or berries. You can also use a toy as a simple reward. Observe what the best reward for your pet is and be consistent regarding your offering. Teaching a parrot to talk is a very rewarding experience and fulfilling for a parrot owner. You can create a good and strong relationship with your parrot that will last as long as they live.
