How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping Up on People
By Jonathan Pitts | Training | Unrated

Dogs love jumping up on people especially to their owners. The truth is, even the most dog lovers wouldn’t want to be greeted by their dog in a frightening jump and kibble breath on their face. Jumping is a normal behavior for canine but it is not widely acceptable for most human. The most preferred method to stop your dog from jumping on people is to withhold the action whenever they seek or need attention.

• Put a leash on your pet dog. You will need a regular flat leash for your dog. Ask some dog lover friend to come into your house and knock at your doorstep carefully. Command your dog to a sitting position. Make sure that your dog is far from the door for your scheme to be more successful. After that, you can ask your friend to enter your house. Carefully observe your dog’s behavior. If your dog suddenly jumps off your friend ask your friend to quickly leave the house without any talking, touching or even looking at the dog. Repeat those step everyday if possible until your dog behave and sit while your friend enter your house. While your dog is still in his sitting position, with your permission, your friend can give attention to your dog or greet your dog. If the dog suddenly jumps over after the greeting, instruct your friend to move farther from the dog’s leash. Command your dog to sit again before he is permitted to greet your friend. Repeat the steps until your dog realizes that he can only get attenti on by sitting quietly and politely.

• You can also try another method by letting your dog jump to you as his usual ways. Leave the house for awhile to get your dog too excited to see you. When you arrive your dog will definitely jump to welcome you. Hold the dog’s paws with your hand. After that keep your dog in that position for awhile until he becomes very uncomfortable. Scold your dog with determination by saying "bad dog, no jumping". Walk your dog around and still in that same position. This kind of dog training is only recommended for medium to large size dog. Dogs usually do not like losing control with their front legs. Your dog can associate jumping with discomfort. Peat the same process every time you arrive at your house to see better result.

You may also try raising your knee while your dog is approaching you to jump. Your knee will touch the chest area of your dog. Don’t worry too much if your dog yelp, it will not hurt him. You just have to lift your knee and not pushing your knee to hurt the dog. Keep repeating this raise knee method until your dog doesn’t jump on you. Normal dog can sense the idea after six times of repetition. Some dogs may be very stubborn but you do not have to lose your patience if you want to correct your dog’s habit.
