Tinnitus is characterised as an unpleasant ‘ringing’ or other noise in the patients ear, which can induce headaches, frustration, lack of sleep and distraction. For sufferers it can be extremely unpleasant and distressing, and can be difficult for loved ones to live with. Homeopathic for tinnitus remedies do exist however which aim to treat the problem using only natural ingredients and without side effects.
Tinnitus itself is not a disease or a condition, but rather a symptom that can have many causes. This makes homeopathic for tinnitus a good fit, as homeopathy attempts to treat every patient as individual and every condition as unique, and for its treatments to reflect this. A homeopathic remedy will be selected that looks into the unique sound of the tinnitus itself (tinnitus has been described as sounding very differently in different patients from a ‘wooshing’ noise to the sound of crickets or frogs), as well as the other factors surrounding the condition. Common causes can be age related loss of hearing, meniere’s disease, high blood pressure, sinus problems, allergies, trauma to the ears or brain, stress other psychosomatic causes, anemia, atherosclerosis and other unknown conditions. Homeopathy for tinnitus will aim to treat both the symptoms and the underlying genetic causes (the miasms) and the symptoms themselves.
These treatments will work by using tiny diluted substances that would cause the symptoms of the condition in a healthy patient in order to stimulate the immune system to tackle the problem itself. For this reason it is normal to experience slight worsening of symptoms before they eventually subside after taking homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic for tinnitus then may well cause ringing or sounds to get worse initially. Commonly prescribed homeopathic substances are graphites – which can help problems derived from sinuses including tinnitus and earache, carbo veg – which can help tinnitus presenting with nausea and vertigo, as well as pulsatilla and sulphur for other causes and related problems. Homeopaths would recommend looking for these products at a high ‘potency’ rating (the highest being 200C). Seek consultation for a fully tailored prescription.
It should be remembered however that there is no evidence for the effectiveness of any homeopathic remedies. The process by which they are diluted (potentisation) involves powerful shaking and beating called succussion which actually rids the substance of every pharmaceutically active particle, meaning that the final substance is just water or alcohol. For this reason the effectiveness of these treatments beyond the placebo effect is debatable, and homeopathy falls into the category of ‘pseudoscience’. While it may be worth trying, it should not be used in the place of conventional medicine, and customers should not part with too much money.
