STD Testing at Home

All sexually active persons and those with more than one sexual partner should be conscious about their health. One of the best ways to check if you are healthy is thru a STD test. This test is usually done in a hospital, clinic or a health center supervised by a qualified health practitioner or doctor. Now, STD testing can be done in the comforts of your home, and you can start the test yourself.

You can use a STD home kit. It can be purchased from a pharmacy or you can get one online. It may consist of a compact sealed sterile vaginal swab and instructions to use it. This kind of STD home kit is usually used by women who want to check themselves for STD diseases like Chlamydia or gonorrhea. Most women prefer to do this in the privacy of their homes. The self-collected vaginal swabs are just as effective compared to those done in clinics and hospitals. If the result is positive then the user is referred to a health clinic for further treatment.

The home STD test also provides for a urine sample you collect yourself and then sending it a laboratory for analysis. The test may also require some rectal or genital swab and blood sample. Sometimes, it could be a combination of urine sample or genital swab or any of the other combinations. All of these samples are sent to a lab and results would be available in a few days online for your private viewing.

However, there are some who are not convinced of the effectiveness of the home STD kits. There may be a possibility of wrong analysis or diagnosis of samples because the one using it has not followed proper instructions. There may be possible contamination due to improper handling of samples while being sent to the lab. There are also some cheap home STD tests which are poor in quality and the results are not too reliable. It is good to remember that home STD test kit always includes a lab referral where your samples are to be sent for further analysis. If this is not part of the home STD test kit you ordered online or you bought from a pharmacy, then you have likely gotten yourself into a scam of those fake home STD test kits.

Another considered downside of using home STD test kits is how the person using it would react to the results of the test. If tested positive, the person would feel mixed emotions of fear, panic, remorse, anger and shame. The person is alone in the privacy of the home with no one to seek sympathy from; whereas if the test is done in a clinic or hospital, the doctor is already there to discuss treatment with the person. That is why it is part of the instructions of the home STD test kit to seek doctor’s advice immediately if the result is positive. Some even offer counseling over the phone to help the person cope with the situation.

The STD home test kit is a healthy choice if you want to check yourself of sex-related diseases; if you have the symptoms then you use this because you need the privacy to know the results yourself first. Then, the next important thing to do is to consult a doctor who would help you in providing the treatment that you may need and assure you of the confidentially of your condition.
