Either by force or by resilience we all have our share of encounter with angry individuals. Some individuals cause trouble beyond our wildest imagination, when they are engulfed with one of the most strongest human emotion - Anger. How do we deal with these angered individuals? We certainly do not want to add fuel to the fire, and thereby worsen the situation.
Letís have a glance at the mistakes one should avoid while dealing with an angry individual. We will also take a look at some suggestions to improvise on the situation so that things do not blow out of proportion.
Anger Will Not Kill Anger
There is no denying to the fact that anger as an expression attracts anger. If an individual is expelling anger on you, you are bound to be angry yourself. However, this will only worsen the matter. Remember, anger can perhaps win you the situation, but you will lose the person involved in the situation.
Instead of counter attacking the person with more anger, try to stay as calm as you can. This will not only help you comprehend the person and the situation better, but this will also prevent the situation from getting further escalated.
Donít Repeatedly Tell the Angered Person to Calm Down
This is perhaps one of the most spontaneous reaction most of us display when we encounter an angry person. We usually tell the person to calm down, and to stop expelling venomous words upon others.
While your intention may be right, the approach is not. Think about it; if you are angry, and someone tells you to keep your mouth shut, would you take it in the right sense, especially when you are angry? Most likely, "NO". An angry person dislikes instructions, and would not like to be told, what to do and what not to do. The most common reply in this case would be "Mind your own business" or "Donít tell me what to do".
You need to understand that these responses are absolutely normal in such instances. As a matter of fact, you canít expect a better response during such situations, which is why itís important to understand that the person has a specific reason to feel that way. Donít waste your time and efforts by telling the person to calm down because these words will only fall on deaf ears.
Donít Stick Around for Too Long
If you stick around for too long, then there is a possibility that you might get angry as well. If a person wants to yell at you, allow the person to do so at that point. If you think it is safe, then walk away from the individual for the time being. This will make the person realize that you are in no mood to participate in the heated argument. Also, the person will understand that you have given him/her some time to cool their nerves.
All the above mentioned techniques are effective and time tested. These tips will certainly prove to be helpful while dealing with the most strongest and undesirable human expression - "Anger".
