What Causes Tourette Syndrome?

Tourette syndrome is a genetic neurological disorder. The syndrome starts in childhood and is characterized by multiple motor dysfunctions and a minimum of one phonic disorder. Tourette syndrome is seen to occur in the spectrum of tic disorders that includes chronic and transient tics. The exact cause of the Tourette syndrome is unknown but it is established that it is a combination of environmental and genetic factors. However, it has been seen that most of the cases of Tourette syndrome are genetically acquired but there are no genes that have been identified.

The tics caused are a result of the abnormal functioning of the basal ganglia, thalamus and the frontal cortex of the brain. This involves the abnormal activity of the neurotransmitters. The non-genetic factor that does not even being a cause of the Tourette syndrome makes the condition worse. Some of the incidents of Tourette syndrome can be genetically associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, the relation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Tourette syndrome is still not explained. The condition can also be caused by infections and tics, but the incidences remain controversial.

The syndrome is characterized by neurological disorder that leads to involuntary twitching of the muscle and also violent jerking of the body. The symptoms of Tourette syndrome can be treated with the help of medicines and there are also numerous herbal medicines that give the person suffering from the condition relief. There are certain things that people suffering from any kind of neurological disorder should avoid. These include caffeine sugar, refined foods and white flour. These can help reduce the symptoms and also alleviate any kind of suffering. There are many food allergies that can trigger any reaction making the condition worse.

It is important that any allergies should be identified and any substance that triggers these allergies should be avoided. People suffering from Tourette’s syndrome are required to have nutritional diet and it is better if they switch over to organic foods. Use of any kind of herbicides and pesticides should be avoided so that they can prevent causing any kind of reaction that can worsen the condition. The person suffering should switch over to using herbal products and avoid the use of chemicals that can be harmful.

Getting to know nutritional deficiencies and providing the person with supplements with a balanced diet can alleviate the condition of the person. There are a number of supplements that can prove to be beneficial for the patient like niacin, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. These supplements have been proved to be helpful for people suffering from Tourette’s syndrome. If the person suffering from the syndrome has hypoglycemia then it should be identified and a diet should be given to the person that gives relief from the syndrome. Taking proper care and having medications and suggested supplements on time will help making the condition better.
