By James Madhok | Panic Disorders | Rating:

Panic attacks can be a horrible experience. Beyond the pain and discomfort, there is lots of stress associated with panic attack. Itís really hard to see yourself or your family members being engulfed by this problem. Although it triggers occasionally, it has the potential to disrupt your day to day activities, especially if you are not a mentally tough person.

Unlike the past, there are more effective measures and means to deal with panic attacks. Proper medication and therapy is the way to go, when it comes to effective treatment of this condition. While medication will help the victim in the rehabilitation process, proper therapy along with medication will ensure that the person starts thinking positively and paves goodbye to the negative thoughts that can potentially trigger panic attacks.

Letís have a look at the drugs which can help one deal with panic attacks effectively.

Beta Blockers

Beta blockers contribute by controlling the physical symptoms associated with panic attacks. You must have often witnessed an individual with panic attack trembling and shaking wildly enough to scare you out. Beta blockers reduce the rapidly racing heart beats, and control the shaking and trembling motion.

Unlike other drugs out there in the market, beta blockers do not carry major side effects, but one can experience drowsiness, short term memory problem, reduction in heart rate, insomnia and nightmares. Beta blockers is more of a temporary solution for this problem that will offer you short term relief.

Tricyclic Antidepressants

These medications are widely used to treat panic disorders. Most people resort to this medication, while suffering from severe depression associated with anxiety. While this medication is found to be extremely effective, there are certain side-effects connected with it. The most common side effects that one can experience are dryness of the mouth, constipation and difficulty in urine passage. Some individuals have also complained about weight gain, blurred vision and loss of sex drive along with lack of energy, sweating and disturbed sleep. Most of the side effects are reversible, which is one of the reasons why people resort to this medication. Although itís not a long term solution to eliminate panic attacks, individuals looking for a temporary fix can consider this medication to deal with panic disorders.

Few of the other well known drugs used for panic attacks are benzodiazepines and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). The effectiveness of the drug would be determined by its impact on your health. Whether it has been able to prevent or reduce the occurrence of panic attacks in your life.

As such, the occurrence of panic attacks cannot be determined. It can strike you at any place and at any time. That being said, one should not worry much about the condition. While taking appropriate medication is important, itís equally important that you do not allow this condition to affect your quality of life. Panic attacks last only for a few minutes. You shouldnít be bothering yourself much about the condition, nor live with the constant fear of the next unpredictable attack.
