How to Correct a Slouch

Slouching is not only unappealing, but itís also bad for oneís overall health. Slouching exerts unnecessary stress on our vertebrae and neck. As a result, an individual falls prey to body ache, stiffness and muscle tension. Not to forget the fact that slouching can lead to grave back concerns. Also, in a professional environment, slouching would reflect lack of confidence and insecurity.

Take Timely Action

Those who have been slouching for years shouldnít waste any further time on getting rid of this posture. Timely action is the key to ensure that the situation doesnít slip out of oneís hands. You will be able to reduce the chances of getting affected by back pain to a great extent by working on your slouched posture. Letís have a look at the different means that can help you correct a slouch.

Strengthen Your Muscles

Remember, there is no quick fix for slouching. Strengthening your muscles will go a long way in improving your posture. Over here, you should place emphasizes on your shoulder and back muscles. There are good numbers of exercises for the back that can help you in the process. Apart from strengthening your back and shoulder muscles, you should also build your abdominal muscles.

Massage Regularly

Regular massage can also be of great help to work on oneís slouching posture. What massage does is that it loosens up our stiff muscles. Freed muscles ensure that you donít have a slouching posture. On the other hand, stiff muscles force your back to develop a bad posture.

Maintain Correct Standing Position

No matter what you are doing, you should be aware about your posture. Since majority of us spend most of our time sitting or standing, we should practice correct sitting and standing posture. To stand with a correct posture, you should keep your head high. You chin should be tucked in and your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders. Your chest should be out and your knees should be straight as well.

Make sure that your stomach and your pelvis are in a neutral position. Practice this posture and your health will eventually thank you! Also, you should ensure that you donít stand in the same position for a prolonged period of time. Keep switching your feet after every 10-15 minutes to avoid unnecessary strain on your knees and lower back.

Donít Slouch While Sitting

In this technological world, there are numerous job profiles that require an individual to spend several hours in front of the computer screen day in and day out. Needless to say, long hours of sitting would result into a slouched position, once a person gets tired. One should ensure that they make use of a good chair that can be adjusted properly so that one can sit comfortably for several hours. Your best bet would be to invest in ergonomic furniture as they are designed to avoid bad posture.

Take a Rest

Sometimes, nothing sounds more beneficial than taking a rest. One should ensure that they provide rest to their body in periodic intervals to prevent slouching, back pain and muscle stiffness. At least take a 5 minutes break after every hour.

Stretch Your Body

Our muscles tend to hold pressure while we are performing any activity for an extended period of time. When this happens, we tend to slouch. To release the pressure, one must perform some basic stretching exercises. Needless to say, make stretching a part of your daily routine to experience maximum health benefits. Your slouched posture will certainly improve over a period of time.

Set an Alarm

Itís difficult to have a check on your body posture in periodic intervals. By the time you realize that you are carrying a slouched posture, you end up doing fair amount of damage to your health. Itís in your best interest to set an alarm to have a reminder about your body posture. In this manner, you will be able to build a muscle memory that will compel you to check your body posture in regular intervals.

    I've been slouching for almost a year now.... once I did these steps, my back has been straight for 6 weeks now!
