What Chemicals Are in Tap Water?

The chemicals found in ordinary tap water are known to be very common. Public drinking analysis done by experts have uncovered that tap water contains over 2000 different types of toxic chemicals. This makes owning a water purification very important. The only healthy and safe way to drink ordinary tap water is to use a water purification.

Chemical Sources

Chemicals will enter into tap water from many different types of sources. Pollution is one way that chemicals have gotten into the tap water supplies. Other ways are when chemicals are added to the water by the public water systems. The most common of these chemicals is chlorine. Chlorine is the most common of the types of chemicals currently being used to treat public water supplies. It is used to remove and to kill any bacteria which could be living in the water. This type of treatment prevents people from getting ill from drinking unsanitary water.

Health Risks From Chemicals

Even though chemicals are added to tap water to purify it for drinking and cooking in homes, there are still health risks. Adding chlorine to water is actually adding a poison to the water we drink. Over time, chlorine taken in small doses will increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and other health conditions. Most all public drinking water systems use chlorine to purify water.

Other chemicals which are found in drinking water are equally as deadly. Chemicals, such as pesticides and fertilizers in drinking water have been linked to birth defects. Yet, chemicals have been used for years to purify drinking water by killing the parasites that live in it. However, experts say that these parasites are becoming immune to the chemicals and are living after purification treatments. These types of parasites will cause serious health problems in your digestive system.

How Dangerous Is Tap Water?

Is tap water really that bad for us to drink? The government regulates the processing of drink water through the EPA and FDA. They are aware that dangerous chemicals may still remain in the drinking water. While there are standards in place for the maximum amount of contaminants allowed in water, none of these levels are at zero. Meaning, that there are dangerous toxins in the water which we drinking from the tap. Large increases in cancers and other diseases have been reported in places where there has been poor processing of water purification systems.

Some Types of Chemicals in Drinking Water

This is a brief list of the types of toxins in drinking water and what effects they can have on your health.

  1. Chlorine – Can cause bladder and rectal cancers, and also asthma. Recently, experts have linked chlorine to breast cancer.
  2. Lead – Lead enters tap water through corroded pipes. Lead in drinking water is harmful for pregnant mothers and children. Lead poisoning has been proven to cause learning disorders and severe developmental delays.
  3. Giardia and Cryptosporidium – These types of protozoa are responsible for widespread and severe outbreaks of gastro-intestinal diseases. They will make their way in the water system whenever here has been a sanitation breakdown.

What Can You Do?

Many people have been turning to bottle water in order to avoid drinking tap water. At first glance, this would seem to make perfect sense, except for the expense of buying bottled water. However, the main problem with any type of bottled water is the containers which they come in. The plastic which are used to make the containers contain chemicals are well. These chemicals are absorbed by the water when it comes in contact with the container. The chemicals in the plastic containers have also been proven to cause cancer.

The best way to guarantee that you are drinking water which is pure would be to install a carbon filter water purification system. These are proven to be a cost effective and easy way to get the best drinking water possible for you and your family. All you have to do is to simply install your system and you will be turning your chemical filled tap water into a toxic free source. A carbon filtration system is the best way to remove chemicals and purify your drinking water. It will remove almost 100% of the toxins and leaves you drinking water with only healthy minerals.

  1. Using the term experts, and not giving clear examples makes this paper sound like you just made up these facts yourself. Why should I believe that my health and wellbeing is in jeopardy when you sound like you have no hard facts and instead just want people to buy water filters?

  2. I have always been leery of tap water since I was a youngster say around 7 to 8 years old. Tap water never tasted very good to me and my mother was always concerned that I wasn't drinking enough water. Now I drink bottled water and still worry because of the use of plastic, again a petroleum product, for the oil companys to make more profits from, no one seems to care that it causes CANCER. People eat, drink, and breath petroleum products, but seem to be more concerned about smoking of which I am not endorsing but the truth of the matter is there are so many other chemicals that we are in contact with daily yet no one ever talks about them only cigarettes and smoking.

I would much rather smoke a cigarette than sit in a tunnel of heavy traffic breathing exhaust fumes for sometimes 15 minutes to an hour daily depending on traffic or an accident. I've been traveling the same road for almost 30 years breathing other people's chemicals that I know are harmful to me. What about the spewing factories, truck, buses, aircraft exhaust above us. Almost every product we use comes in a petroleum made product. I think it's time to turn out attention to what is really going on around us. We need to be more aware of what plastics are doing to our health, as well as the amount of petroleum we breathe every day. Come on people it is time to get a better understanding of our everyday living habits. What else is the government not telling us? We need to be informed of all products especially the petroleum made products that can harm us, our children, and grandchildren.

    Thanks for listening.

    1. Thank you for our post. The toxic fumes from factories truck aircraft etc., are real problem. But people are easily misguided by media focusing on other events that are so much less harmful, which the beast keeps on.

  3. Everything causes cancer. Giardia and cryptosporidium are the least of my concerns, the chemicals they use in the water supply are my least concerns. How about all the chemicals, drugs, and other substances tossed down the sewer lines?. Back in the days, you were told to flush your prescription drugs down the sewer. Now they tell us not to do that no more.

How about all the prescription drugs we take, about 1/4, if you are lucky, gets used up and the rest of it is wasted and is taken to the sewer department. Does the sewer treatment department take that out of the water? Probably not, and then it goes back into streams in the cleaned water and eventually goes back into the drinking water.

So when you drink your tap water: are you drinking birth control medicine, pain medicine, etc….

I have heard officials talk about this but is anybody really doing anything about it?

  4. Excellent information!! Shocking how a sizeable majority of Americans, just "let this issue ride"… wtf…

    1. They are more concerned about asking for sources. Instead of taking a sample of their own water and have it tested to confirm it. I have done my homework. I don’t wait for other people to tell me this and that. I haven’t seen the ingredient called fluoride on the list. That is one of the worst. It kills critical thinking.

  5. What is the percent of chances that someone can get cancer from bottled water? I have never heard of someone who has gotten cancer or any type of disease from drinking bottled water. Do you think that water will ever be put into glass bottles?

  6. This article is terrible. It has no real data, no sources to substantiate what little information IS presented, and does not address how bottled water is often held only to the same water safety standards as regular tap water.

I feel like this article was written by a teenager.

  7. What about the effects fluoride has when you drink tap water? The article doesn't mention how tap water could have other chemicals put in it and why they feel the need to use them and why boiling water before you drink it doesn't work in making it safer to drink. If it's just chlorine people were worried about they would just place water aside for a couple of hours so to. Let the chlorine evaporate out!

  8. Thank you! This article was extremely informative, and is perfect for my science project!!! I am researching water quality and comparing tap water to bottled water to alkaline water, and their benefits. Any extra information you could give me on this topic would be much appreciated!

  9. Even bottled water has & does still contain chlorine for drinking so no different than from the tap.

Bottled water has to be filled up from some drinking water supply.
