Baby Clothes: Money Saving Tips

Having kids is expensive and providing them with everything they need is difficult at times, especially with the way the economy is today. When it comes to buying clothes for your baby there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. Babies grow out of their clothes very quickly so spending a lot of money on clothes for them can be counter productive. This is especially true if you are on a tight budget. Fortunately, you will probably be given a lot of the first clothes you will need at your baby shower and at the hospital when you first have your baby. The good thing is a lot of people will even give you clothes for when your baby begins to get older. However, you will still need to buy many clothes on your own. The good news is there are ways in which you can acquire baby clothes for a very low price or even free.

Hand Me Downs

Many children wear hand me down clothing that they have been given either by an older sibling or even by a friend of the family. There is nothing wrong with wearing hand me downs and there is certainly nothing wrong with accepting them for your baby. After all, your baby will only wear his/her clothes for a couple of months anyway. For people who are really struggling there are even some charities that provide free clothing for families in need and if you cannot afford to go and buy your baby clothes then this may be a good avenue to explore.

Thrift Stores

Thrift stores are full of clothing for kids of all ages and it is almost impossible not to find at least a few things you can use for your baby. In fact, sometimes you can find brand new clothing with the price tags still on them at thrift stores. Do not be confused between a thrift store and a consignment shop. Consignment shops are usually a little bit pricier. You want to look for Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift stores or something similar.

Yard/Garage Sales

The name of the sale will usually depend on the part of the world you live in but the idea is the same. People take all of the things they can no longer use and sell them, either in their front yard or out of their garage. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a yard sale at a home that has children present then you will probably find a fair amount of baby clothing there as well. You do not have to buy garbage to clothe your baby in and no one is saying that anything is acceptable but you would be surprised at the diamonds in the rough that can be found at yard sales.

Web Sites

There are a number of websites such as e-bay and Amazon that advertise name brand baby clothing at as much as 50% off store prices. If you want to buy your baby designer clothes then this is a very good way to do so without paying designer clothing prices. You can also find a number of discounts at department store websites. Sometimes these discounts are for online purchases only. Craigslist.org is another website where people advertised cheap or even free used items. It is entirely possible to see an ad placed for a box full of 3 to 6 month sizes of boys or girls clothes for free on this site on any given day. Freecycle.org is another great website at which you can find a number of things you will need for your baby, including furniture, toys, shoes and even clothes.

In Store Sales

Some parents specifically watch for items to go on sale and take advantage of them at that time. For example, you are walking through the department store with your 6 month old baby girl. You see a dress that is size 2T. While you know that it will not fit your daughter right now, you are also aware that it will one day soon. The price tag is just too good to ignore so you buy it without delay. This is a great way to collect nice clothing for your baby at a reduced price. All department stores have sales right at certain times of the year and looking on the sales rack at any time can help you to save quite a bit of money on purchasing baby clothes.

Make Your Own Clothes

If you are inclined to you can also make your own baby clothes by purchasing your own fabric and patterns. If you find fabric on sale then you are even going to save more money. Obviously, this option is for those who are experienced in sewing but if you think about it, learning to sew and investing in an inexpensive sewing machine may still be a lot cheaper than buying all of your children’s clothes in the long run. You can also ask a friend or family member who sews if perhaps she will help you to learn how to make your own baby clothes. Most of the time, if someone knows you need a helping hand; they will be more than happy to oblige you.

We all want our babies to look nice but there is no reason we cannot dress our babies well without having to break the bank in the process. Babies not only grow out of their clothing fast but they also have spills and accidents several times a day. Chances are you have had to toss a lot of perfectly good clothes due to stains you could not remove. This is one of the main reasons why it is a bad idea to buy brand new and expensive baby clothes. You may choose to have one or two outfits that are more expensive for special occasions but for the most part it is best to obtain your baby’s wardrobe for as little as possible.
