Limitations of Teeth Whitening
By Regina Kay | Tooth Whitening | Rating:

There are a few side effects and limitations of tooth whitening. They are detailed below.

Tooth and Gum Sensitivity

When you begin the teeth whitening process you may experience some tooth and gum sensitivity, especially to hot and cold foods. You may get white patches on the gums. These problems will go away after a few days. Or you may try toothpaste recommended for sensitive gums and teeth. You may experience gum irritation from ill-fitting mouth trays. You can either wear the tray for shorter periods or have a short break in treatment until the discomfort wears off.

Fillings, Crowns, and Veneers

These will not respond to teeth whitening treatment. If you want to go ahead with the treatment then you will have to have the crowns, veneers and composite fillings replaced, otherwise you will finish up with teeth of different colors.

Gum Disease, Cavities, or Worn Tooth Enamel

If you have any of the above, teeth whitening bleach may not be effective.

Tetracycline Staining

Do not expect a dramatic improvement in the whiteness of your teeth after initial treatments if your teeth are heavily stained by medication. The improvements will take time and need more prolonged treatment.

Age & Tooth Whitening

The processes are not recommended for anyone under the age of sixteen on medical grounds.

Pregnancy & Teeth Whitening

Treatment is not recommended for pregnant or breast feeding mothers. Ingesting even very small amounts of the product can be harmful to a foetus.

Allergies & Teeth Whitening

Obviously, anyone allergic to peroxide or any of the ingredients, should not use a teeth whitening product.

Results

Results vary according to the individual's age, genetic makeup, teeth condition and the whitening product chosen. Don't expect miracles but there will be noticeable improvements over time. The results from one course of treatment will not last forever. Repeat treatment will maintain and generally enhance the improvements.

Results do show that teeth whitening is an affordable and effective way of getting back that winning smile.
