I Want to Drink More Water! Help Me Change My Lifestyle!

Drinking more water is a lifestyle adjustment. There are many ways that you can go about reminding yourself to drink more water and help your body adjusts to the satisfaction that will be gained from water.

First of all if your body is thoroughly addicted to caffeine, understand that it will take several weeks of dedicated discipline to allow your body to withdraw itself from caffeine dependency. You have two options in this process:

  1. The first option is to eliminate all caffeine cold turkey.
  2. The second option is to wean yourself off caffeine. This would mean that for one week you consume only 8 ounces of caffeine per day. After that seven-day period, you commit to three weeks with no caffeine consumption.

With either option, after one month your body will be completely independent from caffeine consumption. Though you may have cravings from time to time, you will not suffer the bodily symptoms that occur when your body is addicted to caffeine.

For that first month however you will likely suffer a multitude of physical symptoms that will make eliminating caffeine from your daily consumption very difficult. The most common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal are headaches, shaking, fatigue and overall restlessness. The first several days are usually the most difficult. Your body is going to do anything it can to get your mind to convince you to consume more caffeine. However we have all heard of the power of the mind. Your body may shake and your head may begin to hurt, but know that these symptoms are short lived. If you have a job that requires you to work Monday through Friday, it may be a good idea to begin eliminating caffeine on Friday after lunch. Allow your self to have a very light weekend in terms of activity. You will very likely not feel up to doing much of anything. Once you get past that first week, it is fairly smooth sailing from there on out. After two to three weeks of eliminating caffeine from your diet, you will feel entirely different. Your body will feel clean and healthy. Now you can definitely focus on drinking more water. Here are some tricks to help remind you to drink more water throughout the day.

1) Carry a bottle of water around with you throughout the day. Every time you feel the slightest quench of thirst, satisfy yourself with a swig of water. If you enjoy ice-cold water, store bottles that are filled one third full with water in the freezer. In the morning the bottom third of the bottle will be ice and you can fill the remaining part of the bottle with water. This will keep your water ice cold throughout most of the day.

2) If you carry a cell phone around with you at all times, or have a watch that allows you to set an alarm, it may help to set an electronic reminder every hour to prompt you to drink water. After a few weeks of drinking water based on these prompts, your body will naturally start craving water throughout the day. At this point you may be able to listen to your body's natural alarms to prompt you to drink more water.

3) If you work at a desk, make sure that you have a cup or bottle of water always filled on your desk. Take a swig of water every 10 to 15 minutes, and this will help your body feel nourished and hydrated throughout the day. When you're cup or bottle is empty, get in the habit of filling it back up with water immediately. This will allow you to have a constant source of water accessible to you as you are working.

4) Get in the habit of substituting water for the other beverages that you drink throughout the day. Instead of juice or other sugar-based beverages, opt for water. At social events, you can try drinking sparkling water as well.

5) Make sure that you are drinking water throughout your exercise routine. An hour or two before your exercise begins you should drink ample amounts of water so that it has a chance to flow through your system before you start exercising. This will help your body burn calories faster when you are exercising. In addition when you have completed your exercise routine, make sure that you drink more water.

6) For many people it helps to track their habits. Find a way to track how much water you were drinking every day, whether it be in a journal, or an index card that you keep in your pocket or purse where you mark hashes for every glass of water that you consume.

These tips will help you get started with your new habit, and your increased water consumption will get you feeling healthier and fitter. Enjoy your new body and your newfound health!
