A set of precepts for the modern woman who would like to do all she can to protect herself from breast cancer, for her own sake and for those dear to her, should include the following:
Remember that breast cancer is a curable disease—if caught in time.
Note that we have the methods and equipment to detect breast cancer in its early stages when it is still confined to the breast and is therefore curable.
Be aware of the enemy and realize that you have powerful methods on your side.
You most valuable weapon is your own hands. Use the properly and regularly once a month in doing breast self-examination.
Visit your physician once a year—or more frequently if he finds it advisable—for a complete examination. Such an examination may require more equipment and expertise than he has. If so, ask him to arrange for special studies.
Remember that most breast conditions are harmless. At the same time, remember that you owe it to yourself to inform your physician of any new findings in your breast, for only he can make the proper differential diagnosis.
Alert all women close to you to the above advice, and urge them to follow through.
Learn as much as you can about the breast and its disorders. Ask questions of your physician if you do not understand. The more knowledge you have, the better you can protect yourself. Keep informed about new discoveries—you never know when they may be useful.
Never take lightly a change in your breasts. The reassurance of a negative examination by your physician is worth more than the effort involved in getting it.
Above all, remember that the odds are strongly against your ever developing breast cancer—but that you must be on your guard at all times.
