You told your child that she could have a pet. You were thinking a kitten or puppy. Surprise! She wants a ferret. So you don’t know much about ferrets? Keep reading for information that will help you make a decision that is best for you, your child, and the ferret.
Ferret Tip #1
Ferrets are better pets for older children. Your infants and young children will need to be supervised when your ferret is loose in the house.
Ferret Tip #2
Ferrets, especially males tend to bite unless they are properly trained. They have very sharp teeth and a bite can be painful.
Ferret Tip #3
Ferrets are not cuddly animals. They are very active and like to play hard and then sleep for 14 to 18 hours.
Ferret Tip #4
It is recommended that you spend about two hours each day playing with your ferret. These pets are very active and need interaction. If this seems like too much work or doesn’t fit into your busy schedule, you may want to consider getting a ferret.
Ferret Tip #5
Be sure you get a ferret that has been spayed or neutered. Ferrets tend to be a little bit smelly if they haven’t been de-scented.
Ferret Tip #6
Ferrets don’t like to be cooped up in their cages all of the time. Your ferret will need time to explore and run loose in your house. If you have other pets that wouldn’t particularly appreciate having a ferret as a new housemate, you may want to pass on getting the ferret.
You will also need to "ferret proof" your house. Ferrets like to explore and will need to make sure they can’t fit into any heating or air-conditioning ductwork, get to electrical cords or medications and cleaning products.
Ferrets are very lovable and cute. If you are looking for a pet that you can play and interact with, a ferret is for you. There is nothing a ferret would like more than to spend time with you.
On the other hand, if you were looking for a low-maintenance pet that didn’t require much attention; a ferret may not be for you or your child.
Do ferrets make good pets? My personal opinion would be Yes, but everyone maynot agree.
