Signs of Preterm Labor and Pregnancy

Recognizing the Signs of Preterm Labor

Preterm labor is something every mom-to-be dreads. Healthy pregnancies last between 38 and 42 weeks. When a baby is born before the 37th week, it is considered preterm.

What Happens If the Baby Is Preterm?

Babies that are preterm need longer hospitalization and are at risk for dying and long-term health problems such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, blindness and chronic lung problems.

What Causes a Baby to Be Born Preterm?

Even doctors don’t know the answer to this one. It is impossible to remember that if your baby is preterm, you didn’t necessarily cause it. In half the cases of preemies, there is no obvious reason for the early delivery.

Some medical causes of preterm labor are:

  • Twin or triplet pregnancy
  • Cervical or uterine abnormalities
  • Distortions in the amniotic sac
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure

Lifestyle causes of preterm labor are:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Illegal drugs
  • Late or no prenatal care
  • Exposure to DES (a medication)
  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
  • Stress
  • Working long hours while standing

Signs of Preterm Labor

While only one in eight women have preterm labor, it is always important for you to be able to recognize the signs so you can get immediate help.

  • Contractions every 10 minutes or closer
  • Feeling that the baby is pushing down
  • Low, dull backache
  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea along with cramps
  • Vaginal discharge

What Happens During Preterm Labor?

Often preterm labor can be stopped or at least slowed down. If you have any of the signs of preterm labor mentioned above, call your health professional immediately. He will instruct you as to what to do.

If you are admitted to the hospital, you will be put on bed rest and given medication to slow down the contractions. This is important. Even if your labor can’t be completely stopped, it can often be delayed long enough for a neonatal team to get all of their equipment ready for the premature delivery of your baby.

Being pregnant is a wonderful experience. It is important to know the signs of preterm labor and make any lifestyle changes that could possibly cause you to go into labor early. While these things are important, it is also important not to dwell on them or worry excessively. Focus on having a healthy and happy pregnancy.
