How to be healthy? Health is an elusive something to which we pay little attention .... until it is lost. However, once it is lost we would go to the ends of the earth to find it again.
For some time I have been trying to help people regain and maintain their health, but I am still not satisfied with the results. My disquietude stems from the fact that a few months ago one of my readers wrote and asked me if I were doing my utmost to bring to people the truth concerning health. I was surprised to hear that person say that if I contributed anything less than my utmost it was totally unacceptable. This was a rebuke and, considering the millions in America who are suffering from various ailments, I had to admit that I was not doing my utmost. I resolved that I would try to correct the situation as quickly as possible.
Although I had been contemplating a book on juices and raw foods for some time, this 'utmost' accusation really triggered it. So now, along with my correspondence, my semi-monthly Newsletter and my bi-monthly 'Provoker' magazine, I am writing this article and I really feel that I am doing my utmost .... which is as much as any man can do.
Now the main reason for writing this article "How to be healthy?" is the most logical reason in the world .... I feel there is a genuine need for such article. In my possession at this moment I have fifteen books and pamphlets that deal with the value of fruit and vegetable juices. Some of them are quite good and some are fairly good, but most of them leave much to be desired. I have carefully studied all of them and it is my sincere belief that a good book on juices is not only desirable but essential for the health and welfare of many people.
One thought that has often occurred to me concerning juices is the fact that most of the healing professions either ignore or by-pass the use of fresh fruit and vegetable juices as a therapeutic measure. Granted, the medical profession and perhaps other healing professions recommend the use of orange juice or grapefruit juice and perhaps carrot juice on occasion, but, by and large, the healing professions prefer to ignore the potential of juices in health and healing.
True, the value of fresh juices has been recognized by a few medical men and scientists but anyone acquainted with the activities of those learned men knows that they make progress very, very slowly. Yes, while a few medical doctors and healers may recommend fresh vegetable juices for health and healing, I doubt if juices are recommended or used professionally as a distinct and positive therapeutic measure. However, I must admit that Dr. H. E. Kirschner was one medical doctor who really gave live food juices a great big boost.
So, how to be healthy? Anyone who has a proper diet should not require the addition of juices in order to be healthy, but who among us has a proper diet? I, for one, have never yet met the man, woman or child who lives on what I consider to be a proper diet. The fact that one is alive and comparatively healthy does not necessarily mean that he has a proper diet .... nor does the fact that a person lives to be seventy, eighty or even ninety years of age.
I don't wish to sound ridiculous here but I do believe that disease could be eliminated and the processes of old age and even death could be stalled if a human being knew what a proper diet was and followed it religiously. However, this should be started at an early age — the earlier, the better. The longer the delay in starting this diet, the more difficult it will be to achieve longevity. It is claimed by the best authorities that the human body has the ability to repair itself, to construct and reconstruct its cellular structure over and over again, if the proper nutrients are provided.
It was Dr. Alexis Carrel, the great scientist and author of the famous book, "Man, the Unknown," who kept a piece of chicken heart alive for thirty-odd years and when the experiment was abandoned the heart fragment was working as well as ever. All he did was provide two vitally important requisites .... proper food and proper elimination. He claimed that the experiment could have been continued for 100 or 1,000 years, if desired, because there was no sign of deterioration. The experiment was abandoned because he had proved his point and there was no further use in continuing it.
Therfore, among intelligent and open-minded educated men, it is reasonable to assume that the human body, if treated in a similar manner, could be kept alive and healthy almost endlessly. The secret is to supply the human body with proper food .... then good health and long life will follow.
The official statistics, as supplied by the U.S. government, clearly tell us the number of sick and ailing people in the United States. The figures are staggering, which makes it obvious that most of the people in America are not getting a proper diet. This is where juices enter the field, because they can play a most significant role in maintaining or regaining health. However, if everyone followed the practice of eating a perfect diet, there would be no need for a book on the value of vegetable and fruit juices.
Now for any person, layman or scientist, to proclaim that he knows what a proper diet is would be sheer affrontery or egotism. My intensive studies during the past 20-odd years indicate positively and unequivocally that no one knows what constitutes a proper diet for man. Yes, this includes the Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Research Council, the National Academy of Sciences and all other government branches in the United States or throughout the world. I repeat no one knows for certain what constitutes a proper diet.
I know there are books, pamphlets and charts giving what is purported to be a proper diet, but the simple proof that these diets are improper is the fact that they are used widely and broadly in most institutions throughout America, including hospitals, and these diets do not help people to regain their health. In most cases they cause them to become sick or sicker.
The American government disseminates the false information that one would have to go very much out of his way in order to avoid having a proper diet. My contention is that none of the American government men or their researchers and scientists would know a proper diet if he stumbled over one and fell on it. It is because of such fabrications, exaggerations, misinformation, errors and downright lies that it is so important to know the value of live fruit and vegetable juices in maintaining or regaining health.
I want it clearly and unmistakably understood that I do not recommend the regular use of fruit and vegetable juices where adequate amounts of raw vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts are part of the normal diet. However, where do you find people who use ample quantities of raw vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts as part of their normal diet?
I recommend the use of fresh juices only where one's diet is lacking vitally important nutrients and his health is failing. These fresh live juices can correct his condition quicker than anything else .... and when illness strikes, speed is of prime importance. However, if the body has been neglected for months or years and has become depleted and deficient in many vital nutrients, then it may take months or even years to get these sorely lacking nutrients back into proper balance.
The main advantage of taking these vegetable and fruit juices is that you can consume large quantities — even up to a quart or two quarts per day — which would be equivalent to a great deal of health-giving fruits and vegetables. In my opinion, anything less than a pint a day is inadequate where one is seeking to correct an imbalance or bring an ailing organism back to health. The more serious the condition, the greater the amount of juices required ....
We mean freshly made raw juices, not stored or kept in the refrigerator or anywhere else. Only freshly made juices, consumed on the spot, have the potency required for good health and healing. No other juice will do! No substitute will suffice!
You can trust fresh vegetable and fruit juices because you make them with your own hands in your own home. Whom can you trust more than yourself?
