Alter Ego Definition

People have different views on what exactly alter ego is. Here, we will talk about alter ego in the terms that it is a person that people create within themselves and relate to the person in terms of making it an ideal. Once a person creates an alter ego, they start dreaming about the same and living a life of their own with the alter ego. If you are wondering how alter ego is created, then here is some piece of information that can be of help to you.

• Usually, people who have been deprived or who haven’t been able to do what they always wanted to do in life have an alter ego. They seem to live in their dreams and have a life of what they had always wanted.

• They imagine themselves in the world of their dreams and reach their goals with the help of this alter ego. Most of the times the interest of the person and his/ her alter ego are the same and they try to develop it in their own manner.

• There are many people who are unaware of them having an alter ego and there are some who might be aware of the fact. If you know someone who has an alter ego, then you need to observe the person very carefully as distinguishing them can be close to impossible.

Having an alter ego at times can be beneficial, provided it does not go overboard. It gives the person a sense of completeness. However, if the alter ego is more perfect than your real self, then it can result in low self-esteem. It is also at times seen that if the alter ego is dominating, then it can prevent a person from leading a normal life. If you have an alter ego then it is important that you don’t let it dominate over your personal life. This can affect your friends and family in a negative manner.

If you are on the other side of the coin and know that a person is suffering from the alter ego problem, then it is important that you keep a watch on the person. Make note of situations when the person is his/ her normal self and when the person acts as the alter ego. If the alter ego seems to dominate the person, then it is better that you keep such situations at bay so that it does not affect the healthy life of the person.

It is important that you talk to the person suffering from alter ego about their goals and ambitions, this can help you in knowing the hidden desires and you can help the person come out of the alter ego world. However, if the alter ego is less dominant but still is causing a problem, then you definitely need to work this out with your loved one. Talking and understanding the person is the best suggestions that anyone can give you in case of alter ego. So, talk to the person and let him/ her know that how much you care and love them and help them overcome this problem.

  1. I found the article very useful. Simple words for me to understand and identify the alter ego not only in my self, but with my loves ones. Thank you very much!

    Regards,
    Martha

  2. I have researched this topic for years and this is the first article I have ever found that comes close to explaining this person who lives in my head in an accurate sense. My alter ego has never interfered with my life but sure has saved my sanity over the years. Going into his world has brought me loads of comfort.

  3. I have been dealing with this for myself over a period time! This is really helpful for me to understand what I am going through! 🙂 I seem to act in my sort of way half of the time as what my career, this is to interesting for me! I am 12 in 7th grade. I always thought this was a personality.

  4. I found this article very useful and although I don't know anybody with an alter ego problem, I've been struggling with mine for a while. I've tried to get rid of it, but I can't part with it. It personifies my forbidden ambitions and the best parts of my personality, so I inevitably started to resent it for being fictional. Only now do I realize that this character is a perfectly natural psychological tool of escapism. We all become jealous of our imaginary selves after a while, since it can do things that we won't or can't do. What we must realize, however, is that we are far superior to this mental projection. Without our thoughts and desires to fuel it conception, it wouldn't even exist. In other words, the alter ego is the dream and we are the dreamer. Accept this wonderful reflection of yourself into your life without jealousy or remorse.

  5. Wow. This was amazing. I've had my alter ego since April. Didn't know what it was until mid June. I started listening to various singers such as Lana Del Rey and Bats For Lashes. Lana brought out a side of me I never knew existed. She started out as a friend, someone who made me look good. Then in October I realized how evil she was becoming. We have completely different mind sets and we just switch… I can't stand her. I've tried getting rid of her. She is so self conceited and a bully to me and others. My boyfriend doesn't want her around. How do I get rid of her? She puts me down so often. Her name is Joy Serene. Mine is Serena.

  6. My alternative self is named Cody, he's been with me for five years, he has his life history and his life goals, his personality is way different from mine and he dates more ppl than I do 🙁 I care for him but he's kind of a bunghole. I don't understand how he had created his own family though. Mother, father, brother, sister even a twin…

  7. Woohooo! Thanks to this article. I felt I’m having my alter ego before bcos in certain situations involving my interests/desires, I always change my whole personality… and all of the symptoms here are happening to me, so through this I found out myself that I’m having an alter ego, a nondominating.

  8. I created mine to help me overcome my fears. He could help me talk to people who I wouldn't have felt free to. I could now stand up for myself when people wanted to take advantage of my usual silence. All of the time I could recognise that the alter ego was myself in all respects. One day I got scared when the alter ego seemed to have a mind of its own. He could surprise me as he would say things I would never say or think about. I told my friend about it and he just gave me a creepy look. It shook me real hard, and that day I told my alter ego to die. He has been gone ever since. There are times I wish I could bring him back as I don’t seem to know how to create another one, but I console myself that the reason may be that it's because I don't need one anymore.

  9. I feel like the world would be a better, safer, more positive place if my alter ego were more prevalent than my natural state.
