Do You Have Yeast Intolerance?

Yeast comes under the category of fungus organisms and thrives on sugar. The organism produces gases and toxins like acetaldehyde, alcohol, arabinitol, gliotoxin and zymosan. Any form of overgrowth of the yeast can be harmful to the body. The most common form of yeast, which is found in our digestive tract, is Candida.

Yeast is good for the health, but on the other hand it can also be harmful and can cause a problem for you. To maintain a normal digestive system, our body requires yeast in small quantities. But, when this quantity becomes more than what is required, then it results in a series of health problems and people tend to develop intolerance towards yeast. Any condition that results in overproduction of Candida can result in yeast intolerance.

The main factors that result in overproduction of the yeast resulting in yeast intolerance include:

• Having a lot of antibiotic courses which result in killing the body friendly bacteria that are responsible for controlling the production of the yeast.

• Ingestion of oral contraceptives that has synthetic progesterone.

• If you suffer from indigestion because of some other food intolerance problems, then this allows the overproduction of yeast because of the fermentation of the undigested food in the digestive tract.

Some of the general symptoms of yeast intolerance include:

• Production of gas or flatulence after eating any sugar based food

• Feeling tired after eating food

• Bloating of the stomach

• Occurrence of ulcers in the mouth

• Occurrence of bad breath

• Disorders of the skin like psoriasis or eczema

• Congestion of the nasal tract

• Tongue coating

• Frequent mood swings

• Craving for sweets and sugar

• Having a feeling of irritation and light-headedness when hungry, hypoglycemia

• Heartburn or acidity

To know whether you are suffering from yeast intolerance it is important that you have yourself tested. There are a number of medical tests like organic acid tests that can help determine whether you are suffering from yeast intolerance. If you want to try out a home test, then take a glass of clear water and spit into it. Soon you will see the growth of white fluffy yeast or turbidity in the clear water. If you observe any of these, then it is important that you get yourself tested medically. Relying on the home test is not recommended, it is better that you have a medical test done.

If you are suffering from yeast intolerance, then the best way in which you can avoid is to follow a diet that is free of yeast. Remove milk products like cheese and yogurt; avoid processed food, sugary food and sweetened sugary drinks; avoid confectionery products that have yeast and breads, reduce the intake of caffeine and alcohol, and also avoid fruits that have fructose. Before you start any yeast free diet, it is better that you consult your physician, so that you can have an opinion of what foods to avoid and which ones to include.

  3. Very informative article – I have been fighting an unknown yeast overgrowth in my system for 3.5 years. All GP tests came back negative. But same symptoms over & over. Interesting to read here that yeast intolerance can be triggered by "other" food intolerances – which I have suffered on & off for 10 yrs. One thought though….. If you read here all the foods to exclude to combat this demon fungus…. What the heck CAN u eat – not a lot :o( I will battle on and make further cuts as advised here. Just thought some inspiration on foods "to eat" would have finished your read of beautifully :o). Thank U

  4. Avoiding sourdough bread because of a yeast overgrowth is ridiculous. The yeast making the sourdough rise will consume all of the sugars (or most of them at least). Sugar is the enemy, because it feeds the yeast. Alcohol also does not feed yeast. Just like the sourdough, it also already has been "used up" by the yeast that fermented it. The symptoms listed are typical of eating a high carbohydrate meal, not of a yeast infection. Just cit the sugar.

  5. It all seems to fit, the symptoms, as my partner has suffered quite a while and his stomach bloats so much even when he doesn't have yeast. Guess we will need to eliminate one food type at a time and see what his body is intolerant to. But like the other person, a list of foods that are ok or good would have been more helpful too.

  6. This article changed my life. I always assumed I didn't take yeast well but I didn't know it could be the cause of these other symptoms. And to those who had negative comments. You obviously aren't doctors. I went to my doctor after reading this and was put on a diet. And yes no caffeine or alcohol. Alcohol is fermented and contains yeast. And YES no sourdough bread. Even before this diet I never drank beer or ate sourdough bread because I instantly got sick. Hence the yeast intolerance. Don't doubt this article unless you actually have yeast intolerance. It's not sugar intolerance. So yeast needs to be cut out. That's like telling a person who's lactose intolerant it's okay to have milk. Cut out the food you are intolerant to plus anything that makes it grow.

  7. Thank you for this article. I have food intolerance and I have discovered that I have developed severe yeast allergy recently.

    Before I read this article I have started this diet few months ago following my common sense:

    Potato, roasted turkey or chicken, white rice, bread with no yeast, cauliflower, carrots, salt, black paper and a little bit of virgin olive oil.

    I had only as a drink boiled water and a filter coffee and guess what? I didn't need any medicine any more as I used to take tablets (I have taken only half tablet of cetirizine from time to time), nasal spray and asthma inhaler, and I have got back the sense of smell again, which I have lost it years ago, in addition to that I have got rid of the constipation.

    I feel better if I don't eat bread (with no yeast off course), so I stop it for some times and I consume it again for a few days.

    The problem is I have got bloating most of the day now but it might be because of the coffee. I will eliminate the coffee from my diet to see what I will get.

    Other problem is the sugar as really I am craving the sugar and I don't know how to do as I think I am allergic to the honey.

    Because of the sugar I cheated and the allergy symptoms have got back again.

    I still need to check if the red meat causes any problems to me. The good thing is I am not fancy of meat and I hate fish but I can't manage the sugar craving.

  10. I work in bakery and bake yeast bread all day 5 days a week… could this be a reason I'm having urethral infections. I never suffered from any problems like this until now. Thanks!

  11. Pure alcohol and caffeine have absolutely nothing to do with yeast. Vodka and tequila contain absolutely zero yeast or gluten.

  12. Yeast makes me tired and sad. I’ve always had an intolerance to alcohol. I’m going to give up both and see if it improves my health problems, may God help me.
