Lip piercing is one of the most famous body arts that you can see and both men and women adorned with. Though the art looks great, but it is important to take care of the piercing. The lip piercing usually takes 6 to 10 weeks to heal completely. Developing an infection is rare as mouth has the natural ability to fight infections.

There are chances that you might experience swelling, scabbing or redness and at times bleeding and tenderness after the piercing. These are natural and go away with the healing process. Here are some tips that will help you for lip piercing aftercare.

• Avoid drinking, smoking or eating in the first three hours after piercing.

• It is important to avoid the use of drugs, smoking or alcohol before or after the piercing and until the time the wound has healed completely.

• If you are touching the piercing, it is important that you wash your hand every time you do this. There are chances that you will transmit the infection through your hands.

• Make use of saline soak twice in a day until the wound heals completely.

• Make sure you use a new toothbrush that has soft bristles.

• It is advised to brush twice a day so that the food particles are removed. There is a possibility that the food particles can infect the wound.

• It is important to keep the mouth sanitized. Make this a habit after you eat, drink or smoke to keep any infections at bay.

• It is better to avoid oral sex until the wound heals completely.

• After every meal, it is important that you rinse your mouth. It is also advised that you suck anti-inflammatory and antibacterial lozenges for the first 2 weeks to prevent any infections.

• Take anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce the swelling and tenderness. It can also be helpful in reducing the pain.

• Avoid sharing of cups and plates and other eating utensils.

• Vitamin B taken along with zinc fastens the healing process. It is better to start taking the vitamins few months before the lip piercing.

• Avoid eating ice creams and frozen yogurt. Also, avoid sucking on chipped ice for the first 2 weeks.

• Dry the area with gauze or a disposable tissue. Avoid the use of cloth towels as they can contain bacteria and can also get stuck with the piercing.

• Avoid swimming or dipping in pools until the lip area heals.

• It is important to understand that you should not remove the jewelry during the healing period as the hole closes quickly.

• If it becomes necessary to get the piercing removed, then it is better to go back to the piercer and ask him to take it out.

It is important to follow these precautions to avoid any infection that can occur after a lip piercing. Follow proper oral hygiene so that you can avoid interacting with any bacteria.
