Making My Fat Nose Thinner

Having a large nose is something that’s fairly hard to hide. Unlike having extra weight around your waist, or having larger ears, there’s no way you can disguise the most central feature on your face. This is then a source of embarrassment for many people, and some even believe that it stands in the way of their success in relationships and careers. Fortunately there are some things you can do to reduce the size of your nose or to change its shape within reason, here we’ll have a look at some of the options available to you.

The obvious option for reducing nose size or changing nose shape that most people will instantly think of is rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is essentially cosmetic surgery for the nose and this is a mildly invasive surgical procedure that will result in a permanently altered nose shape. The way this works is simple, with surgeons simply peeling back the skin on the nose to reveal the skull, and then chiselling away the cartilage of the bone before returning the skin to normal. This will be done under anaesthetic and will of course result in some down time while you recover and some scarring and pain. This means that the surgeon can give you any nose limited only by the amount of cartilage they have to work with and its shape. This also allows the patient to ‘choose’ their nose from a selection, and even to get the nose of celebrities etc.

Of course there is also a risk factor involved in having your cartilage chiselled, particularly as it’s so close to the eyes and in some rare situations the chisel can slip and damage the patients’ eyes. Similarly if the chisel slips on the nose it can result in it looking deformed. These are rare occurrences but patients should be aware of the risk. At the same time many patients find themselves unhappy with their results even when the rhinoplasty goes well. Many people find that rhinoplasty leaves them too different for example and that they end up missing their old appearance or having something of an identity crisis.

Fortunately there are other methods that you can use to make your nose look slimmer. One method is similarly controversial and opinions are divided on whether it works. Here, people who are unhappy with their noses are told to rub them repeatedly for around an hour a day, with the hope of gradually ‘wearing down’ their cartilage – the reasoning being that this should be possible as cartilage is softer than bone. While some people swear by this method, many others are disappointed with the results; there is no scientific basis for the concept and most would agree that the effort involved renders it impractical.

A more sensible way to slim your nose however is to use optical ‘tricks’ to make is seem smaller even when it isn’t in reality. One way to do this for example is to use makeup, and to apply a darker foundation to the sides of your nose in order to make it look as though there is shadow there which will make it look narrower. Similarly you should use a foundation of any tone on the end of the nose to prevent it from catching light, or from looking red which can make it stand out. For women makeup can also be used on the other features in order to make them stand out more and make the nose look smaller as a result, or at least make it less noticeable. Using a dark eye shadow can achieve this end, as can using a bright lipstick – both of these causing people to look straight at those rather than noticing your nose right away. This will also make those features look larger and you can thicken your lips with a gloss and bright lipstick with a lip liner drawn just around the outside of your lip line or make your eyes look larger by extending your eye shadow; and this in turn will make your nose look smaller in comparison.

Another method is to make your face look larger in order to space out your features and make them appear smaller. To do this, avoid having hair on your face – a fringe for example will leave you with less visible flesh on your face so that your nose takes up a larger proportion of it. Meanwhile a moustache can have the same effect.

Better than any of these methods however is simply to learn to accept your nose as it is. A fat or big nose isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and you can still be good looking if your other features match or compensate. It’s part of what makes you you and as with all such things you should learn to accept yourself as you are.

  2. Thanks for the tips! I surely do feel a LOT better after reading this. 🙂 & I especially liked reading the part which said, 'they end up missing their old appearance'… for I believe that'd be so me, haha! :'D #workwithwhatyouhave

  3. First time ever I read that last sentence. Thank you for saying it. Means a lot to other people like me 🙂

  4. This article was really helpful, specially the last line about accepting yourself as you are. It really made me feel better.

  5. It would be so much easier to accept myself as I am if other people hadn't t made hurtful comments about my appearance. Lot of painful little memories. I try to remember God made me look this way but it is still very hard sometimes. Do other people think we would have chosen to be unattractive if we had any say in the matter? Fortunately, I have the face only a mother (and my wonderful husband) can love. I suppose that's more than enough…
