Mumps Symptoms


Mumps is an ailment commonly witnessed amongst children in the age group of 2 to 12. That being said, adults are also susceptible to this condition. Mumps is caused by a virus that leads to inflammation of the parotid glands. The irony lies in the fact that this ailment has the potential to spread like wildfire. The virus can stretch from one individual to another by mere contact and activities such as coughing, talking etc. As a matter of fact, if you eat food from an unclean plate previously served to a Mumps victim, then there are chances that you might catch up the ailment as well.

Vaccination is a must to stay immune from this condition. Most states have passed laws stating compulsory vaccination amongst children. The symptoms of Mumps can grow over a period of time, if the victim does not attend to the ailment. Fever, lack of appetite and headache are the early symptoms associated with this condition. One will experience high temperature for a few days, upon infection. In the next few days, the saliva gland will tend to swell due to which a person will experience swelling in internal body organs.

One of the most feared conditions associated with Mumps is Orchitis. Orchitis can cause swelling, pain and tenderness in one or both the male testicles. Testicle swelling can be extremely painful and can leave one in bewildered state of mind. Although the symptoms are not life threatening, it does cause lot of emotional and physical trauma. Also, the condition can prove to be lethal, if the patient is not treated on time. Besides this, there are many other symptoms linked with this condition. Let’s have a good look at these symptoms:

-Most sufferers will have trouble swallowing food. They will experience great pain while eating, due to intense swelling. The swelling can last for a week or two, and during this period some individuals may tend to skip meals in order to avoid pain.

-Swelling of the parotid glands can also be experienced by the victims. Some individuals may experience swelling in one gland, while others may experience swelling in both the parotid glands.

-Dehydration is another common symptom associated with this condition.

-Continued vomiting and stiff neck can also be experienced by the sufferers.

-Some individuals feel shooting pain in their abdominal area.

-Muscle soreness, earache and nausea are few other symptoms linked with Mumps.

Although the list of symptom is huge, they do not pose serious health complications, provided one opts for timely treatment. Remember, the condition can elevate upon non treatment. That being said, there is no hard and fast rule with regards to the symptoms displayed by the victims. A sufferer may not necessarily showcase all or any of the above mentioned symptoms. In some cases, the symptoms are so mild that they can easily go unnoticed. It’s imperative that one doesn’t allow the disease to run its full course without any treatment in order to win over the battle against Mumps.
