Foods to Eat for Acute Renal Failure

Acute renal failure, also known as kidney failure, occurs when the kidneys stop being able to filter the blood and flush waste products and toxins from the body in the urine. This then results in the build up of those toxins and substances in your blood which can have a range of different unwanted effects. At the same time, another symptom of renal failure is that the kidneys stop producing the hormone ‘erythropoietin’ which is responsible for stimulating the bone marrow to make red blood cells that carry oxygen around our body resulting in tiredness and memory problems, lack of concentration and dizziness/low pressure (though high blood pressure can also be a result of renal failure just to be confusing!).

As such the aim of a diet aimed at improving the kidney function would be to lessen these harmful substances and to bulk up the red blood cell count, while providing the body with the elements it needs in order to rebuild the kidney and restore normal service. Following then are some foods to eat with kidney failure.

High iron foods: Eating foods high in iron can help to restore the red blood cells and thus combat feelings of tiredness and dizziness. Ensure that you avoid dark leaves however, and red meats, which are both harmful in other ways.

Soy: Regular protein is damaging for the kidneys as it is difficult to digest (one sign of kidney failure is a larger than-normal amount of protein in the blood). However protein is nevertheless important as this is what the body uses to make repairs and to heal – including making repairs on and healing the kidneys. Use soy then as a safe protein substitute.

High calcium foods: Low calcium is another symptom of kidney failure. However again it is hard to get calcium as many of the normal sources are bad in other ways. Look for breakfast bars, milk substitutes or frozen yogurts for some examples of safe calcium sources.

Water: Having lots of water will help your body to flush itself of toxins and will also dilute the blood of some of the more harmful substances that have built up. Drinking lots of water is always healthy for these reasons anyway.

Fiber: Similarly fiber may help to flush the system and clear away things like cholesterol that can build up as a result of kidney failure.
