How to Care for Curly Hair

Having curly hair can be a blessing at times but at other times it can be a nightmare. It is so easy for curly hair to become unruly, frizzy and just plain uncontrollable and it really takes a lot of patience, care and some really good products to keep your locks looking good. In addition, there are many things you should never do when it comes to caring for curly hair. The following information may prove helpful to anyone who has curly hair and would like to know how to care for it properly.

Hair Care Products for Curly Hair

When you have curly hair, you cannot just buy and use any hair care products. It takes very specific products to properly maintain curly hair. For example, a person with curly hair would not want to use a shampoo that is designed to have volume. This kind of shampoo is intended for people who have fine hair that needs a little extra bounce. Typically, curly hair tends to be a bit of the dry side so in extra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner would be the best option. There are a number of products at a number of different price ranges that have been specifically formulated for the care of dry, brittle for curly hair. In addition, humidity seems to be a problem for people with curly hair. As a result there are also a number of different products that have been created to help keep curly hair under control in humid conditions.

Avoid Using a Brush on Curly Hair

Using a hairbrush on curly hair can cause hair to become extremely frizzy and fly away. For this reason, it is best to use a wide tooth comb or pick to remove the tangles from curly hair. The best way to do this is in the shower while you have conditioner on your hair or when you have just stepped out of the shower, after applying some sort of product that has been formulated as a detangler. Not only is it a bad idea to use a brush on curly hair for the reasons mentioned above, but using a brush on curly hair can cause breakage and split ends. The only time a hairbrush should be used on curly hair is when you are attempting to blow dry your hair straight. Otherwise steer clear of hair brushes altogether if you have naturally curly hair or have curly hair due to a permanent.

Give Your Hair a Break

While you may not like the way your hair looks when it is curly, it is not suggested that you continuously blow dry your hair to straighten it on a daily basis. Doing this will cause more damage than you can imagine. There’s nothing worse for your hair than constantly heat styling it. In fact, heat styling is one of the most common ways people cause damage to their hair. When you have curly hair you are going to have to be resigned to the fact that at least some of the time you will have to wear it in it’s natural state. If you have ever seen a person’s hair after years of heat styling every day, you probably already have a good idea of how horrible and unhealthy it can begin to look. This is likened to people who use chemicals on their hair all the time. Heat styling will have the same damaging effect. If you must use heat styling then always use some sort of hair protected for heat styled hair prior to blow drying.

Enhance Your Curls

Rather than try and change the fact that your hair is curly by trying to blow it straight, use hot irons on it or have it chemically straightened, try using products that enhance the appearance of your curls. There are so many people who have board straight hair that would kill to have gorgeous flowing curls. Be proud of the hair you were born with and stop trying to change it. There are literally hundreds of different products that have been made to help boost curls and keep them softer looking throughout the day. Try purchasing a mousse or gel that is designed to enhance your curls. This is known as making the best of what you have been given to work with.

Weekly Protein Treatments

Just about every beauty supply store sells what are known as protein packs. These come in small individual use sizes or in standard sized bottles. The way these treatments work is that you apply them to damp hair and then place your head under the dryer or put a heat cap on. This allows the protein to penetrate into the hair shaft better. People, with curly hair, benefit greatly from these kinds of conditioning treatments as they keep the hair much softer and a great deal more manageable. If budget is a problem, the same result can be found using raw egg whites as a protein treatment. It is best to try and use these treatments at least once a week if possible.

If you are one of the many people who wishes they had straight here, take comfort in the fact that for every person who has curly hair and wishes you didn’t, there are at least two people with straight hair who wish they had curly hair. It’s as they say; “the grass is always greener on the other side”. If you take steps to properly care for your curls, you will have tresses that will make you the envy of everyone you come in contact with.
