Eye Drops in Drink

Almost everyone has heard the rumors circulating that Visine, when put in someone’s drink can cause them to have explosive diarrhea. Bartenders often claim that this is their secret for getting back at customers who have been obnoxious or have caused them problems of some sort. There have even been people who have been angry with someone and have tried to use Visine as an annoyance to get revenge. What these people may not realize is that putting Visine in a person drink could actually be deadly. There are many people sitting in jail right now, charged with crimes that involve tainting another person’s food or drink with Visine and making them sick. No one knows for sure where the rumor that Visine would cause diarrhea came from but it is quite clear that it seems to be a common misconception.

What Do Eye Drops in a Drink Really Do?

The active ingredient in eye drops such as Visine is tetrahydrozoline HCI. Ingesting this substance can lead to a variety of harmful side effects such as dramatically lowering body temperature, causing severe breathing difficulty, respiratory failure, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure fluctuation, tremors, seizures and even coma. Each bottle is labeled with a warning that urges people to seek immediate medical attention or call the poison control center immediately, if this medication is swallowed. With this being said, it is clear that it is absolutely no joke to ever try adding eye drops to anyone’s food or beverage. Doing so could result in dire consequences such as severe medical complications or even death. In conclusion, if you are ever tempted to use eye drops in a person’s drink as an effort to get revenge, the best advice is to think twice before doing so.

Documented Proof That Visine Is Poisonous When Ingested

While eye drops have not been proven to cause diarrhea, they certainly have been proven to do things which are much more detrimental. In 1996 there was a case of a two-year-old child who swallowed about 2 to 3 mL of eye drops. Shortly thereafter the toddler became extremely unresponsive and lethargic. Fortunately, the child was rushed to the hospital and given immediate medical care. The child did make a full recovery, but not before having to endure several days worth of intubation and being hooked to artificial respirators. There have been a number of other documented cases in which students have attempted to use the eye drop prank on teachers, either resulting in the teacher becoming seriously ill or in them being arrested and charged with a felony. Unfortunately, there have also been a number of reported cases in which people have been hospitalized for days or weeks with severe medical trauma.

What to Do If You Know Someone Who Is Going to Use Eye Drops in Someone’s Drink

While everyone wants to be the cool kid and no one wants to be a ‘snitch’, there is nothing cool about allowing something to happen to another human being that could cause him/her harm, if there was a way you could have prevented it. Understand that using eye drops in a person’s drink is a form of poisoning that person. If you have knowledge that someone is going to use eye drops in another persons beverage, there are many ways you can handle a situation such as this. You can urge your friends that it is a very bad idea and explain what the possible consequences could be. However, if that doesn’t work you may be forced to take more drastic steps. If you feel that there will be no other option, you can call the authorities and alert them. You can go to the person who is about to be poisoned and tell him or her. There are a number of things which can be done. One of the things you cannot do is sit back quietly and allow harm to be done to someone else.

A Word on Revenge

It is human nature to feel the need to seek revenge on someone who has slighted you in some way. However, there is a big difference between feeling like you would like to get revenge on someone and actually carrying out a harmful act. It is important to remember that there are better ways to handle anger than actually hurting someone. Always take the time to think about your actions very carefully as well as the consequences they could bring, before doing anything that you will not be able to take back. It is sometimes better to walk away knowing that you are the bigger person than to do something in the heat of the moment that you will regret. Feelings, no matter whether they are anger, fear or sadness are fine and everyone is entitled to their own but reacting to those feelings in a negative and harmful way is unacceptable. Remember that you are responsible for your own actions and the effect they may have on other people. What you think may be a harmful joke or prank could cost another person his/her life. Rather than committing a crime, speak to someone about the way you are feeling and try to deal with it in a more positive way.

Another lesson to learn is that it is never a good idea to carry out any kind of act just because someone else has told you that it will be harmless. There are many rumors floating around of practical jokes and things you can do to get revenge on another person and some of those things, as seen here, are dangerous. If you want to play practical jokes on someone, put a whoopy cushion on their seat but never under any circumstances poison their drink.

  4. I believe this has been done to me and I would never wish the feeling on anyone not only did my stomach explode but I was vomiting. I thought it was food poisoning. I found out someone had the idea and the mind to put the drops into a pasta salad that she made. She was my neighbour and we were going out later that day to meet some mutual friends one of them being a guy that I have now been with for 3 years.

  5. Thank you for this article; it really gives me hope and faith in humanity! Hope a lot of people will be inspired by this article to fight for a better world.

  6. I was just hospitalized taken by ambulance right after getting home from 4th of July weekend. I've never had anything so strange happen to me. I got so sick I was lethargic, weak, blurred vision, dizzy, I could not make it to the hospital. Vomiting for an hour straight nonstop seconds between each breath it felt like death, I seriously felt I was going to die. Several tests were taken at the hospital. My girlfriend had said I was pale as if someone tried to poison me. After putting together my thoughts, I had remembered my boyfriend mentioned to me about the eye drop prank a year before we did have a few words with each other for something that happened that 4th of July weekend we were away, right after we got back it happened. Curious how many days does it take for the eye drops to had taken effect? Does anyone know?

  7. #1) This is not Urban legend

#2) It has happened to me more than once

#3) It can take 4 to 12 hours before you notice anything. That is, unless it is a large dose

You will notice a wild swing in blood pressure. You can get cold, vomit, headaches, blood shot eyes, muscle cramps, blurred vision, feel lethargic. Your finger nails and toe nails can turn color to like a gray or slight blue.

#4) Food and beverage servers, bartenders, and restaurant managers all know and sometimes use this on people for whatever their reasons.

The problem we have is that this has now become a cultural way to seek revenge, bully, or just be a mean individual.

It's actually a class 2 felony, assault with a chemical. The problem is getting to prove it. I'm open to ideas, if any one knows how to set up a perpetrator to get them caught.

I went to the police. They don't know how to fight this.
