Home Remedies for Tooth Infection

Tooth infections can be very painful and also very dangerous as there is always a chance of the infection spreading to the blood. For this reason it is always best to seek prompt medical attention if you suspect that your tooth may be infected. However, there are some people who for whatever reason may not have the access or means to receive medical treatment right away and for them there are a few home remedies that may help clear the infection and relieve the pain. Try some of the following techniques when medical care is out of reach or unavailable.

Cloves as a Home Remedy for Tooth Aches

Cloves in any form, whether it is ground, whole or even just the oil are wonderful for tooth aches and infections. Cloves have been used for centuries to help heal wounds and remedy infections of the teeth and gums. Not only do cloves have excellent antibacterial properties but the oil is also very effective as an antiseptic and will relieve paid rather quickly in most cases. Many people swear by the use of cloves for a tooth infection and have found them to be superior to even prescription pain killers in terms of getting rid of the discomfort associated with a tooth ache. There are many ways you can utilize cloves as a remedy for tooth aches. You can either use a whole clove and lodge it between the tooth and the gum in the effected area or you can make a compress out of ground cloves inside of a piece of cheese cloth. Another great way to use cloves is to purchase the pure clove oil from your local health food store and drench a piece of gauze in it and then resting it over the effected tooth. Keep in mind that cloves are not an instant fix and will take a little while to work. The longer the compress is left in place, the better the results will be. Some people have reported that their tooth infection cleared up within a day or two of using cloves.

Using Garlic as an Antibiotic

Garlic has been known since ancient times as one of the most powerful and all natural anti biotics known to man. There are not many people today who are aware of just how effective garlic can be when used to treat infections. The best way to use garlic, while it will burn a little bit going down, is to chew a whole garlic clove until it has been thoroughly crushed and then swallow it. Not everyone can tolerate this but it is by far the best way to get the garlic into your system. Using garlic in this way twice a day can help to replace prescription antibiotics in some cases. You can also use garlic oil in combination with clove oil to make a compress to place over the tooth that is infected.

Salt Water Rinse

When you have any kind of an oral infection, including an infection of the throat, gums, mouth and teeth, salt water is an excellent antiseptic and is recommended for use by doctors everywhere. If you have any kind of an infection in your mouth, you can use a warm salt water rinse several times a day to help draw out the infection and kill the harmful bacteria that may be present in your mouth. It is also a great idea to mix a little bit of vinegar or baking soda with the salt water to offer an even more powerful and effective rinse. Please remember that when you have a tooth ache anything which is extremely hot or extremely cold can make your tooth ache even worse so always use tepid water that is neither hot nor cold when mixing your oral rinse.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

It is also a great idea to use some sort of antiseptic mouth wash such as Listerine a few times a day when you have an infection present in your mouth. This will help keep the harmful germs to a minimum thereby speeding the healing process. You may also notice that the pain will be a lot more manageable when using a rinse such as this to keep the mouth free of bacteria. Brushing your teeth regular, paying careful attention not to be too rough on the tooth that is infected is another great way of keeping your mouth a bit more sanitary so that your tooth can heal on its own. The most ideal thing you can do is to avoid a tooth infection in the first place and proper oral hygiene will make your chances of getting an infected tooth considerably lower.

The danger of replacing proper medical treatment, with any home remedy, does deserve a mention. There are going to be times when medical treatment should be strongly considered. For one, if there is ever the presence of a fever then a doctor or dentist should be seen as soon as possible. An abscessed tooth that is draining pus is also a very good indication that it is time to seek professional help. There are conditions which could be life threatening and must be taken very seriously and an abscessed tooth is one of those conditions. As much as we would like to think we can handle these situations at home, modern medicine has given us better and safe options. This is especially true when dealing with a child. Always use discretion when determining whether or not a doctor should be contacted.

  1. Although clove oil is a tried and true medication for helping with dental pain, it does not "cure" abscessed teeth. An abscessed tooth is a tooth with a dead nerve and blood supply that acts as a home for circulating bacteria that hops on board, or comes from infected material via bacteria from the mouth and saliva that comes from the top in. You might feel better for a while, but the abscess will come back. If you are unlucky it could make your diabetes worse, or lodge in your brain or heart.

  2. Thank you, for your advice on this painful matter. I have a heart condition and antibiotics simply make me so sick I can't function for weeks. I much prefer natural remedies so as not to compromise my immunity to colds & flus.

  3. This was very helpful. My tooth and gum pain always seems to materialize on the weekend when nobody is in their office to help. While just looking for something to help until I can get to the dentist, this looks very helpful to tide me over until Monday. Thank you.

  4. I found the answer I was looking for in seconds when I had to spend ten minutes on the phone with a registered nurse hotline. She couldn't even give a definite answer. Thanks for this informative article!
