How to Handle Workplace Anxiety

Most of us spend more time awake at our work place than anywhere else – you go there for eight to nine hours a day five days a week and leaving just isn’t an option. This is all very good and well, but for those who don’t enjoy their jobs it means spending the vast majority of their lives unhappy – which is a terrible shame. Worse though are cases where people find their jobs highly stressful, which can make them miserable, can prevent them from enjoying the time they spend at home and with friends, and which can even tax their immune system and leave them more susceptible to a range of illnesses.

As such it’s highly important to be able to tackle workplace anxiety and to be able to look at your job in a more logical way. Remember – at the end of the day nothing is worth your happiness. Here we will look at a few ways you can help yourself to overcome workplace anxiety.

Speak to Your Superiors

If you feel like you have too much work, like your colleagues aren’t pulling their weight, or essentially as though you are unhappy at work for whatever reason then you should speak to your superiors and tell them that you’re unhappy. Even if your gripe is with the bosses themselves, you should still bring it up – they’ll have to go through professional procedures. See if any of your colleagues feel the same and collect signatures to back up your claims. If they don’t make life easier for you then they might even offer you a raise.

Space Out Your Holiday

Using up all your leave in one go might seem like a great idea at the time, but further down the line you’ll regret it. One great way to organise your leave is to spread it out so that you have lots of long weekends. Say you get four weeks holiday then that’s 28 days meaning you could have a short working week for almost half of the year in theory.

Don’t Worry About Getting Fired (Too Much)

One thing that many very conscientious people find they worry a lot about in the work place is the threat of getting fired. Here they are concerned that if they drop the ball – lose a document or upset a customer – that they will get dropped from the organisation. This is of course an understandable cause for concern, but in most cases it is unwarranted. Companies need to go through many legal procedures in order to fire anyone, and at there are very likely many other people who are doing a worse job than you. In fact if you manage to relax you’ll likely find you do a better job (and if it’s causing you that much stress why would it matter to get fired anyway? Companies aren’t legally allowed to give you an outwardly negative reference anyway).

Look for the Next Step

It’s important in all aspects of our lives – particularly our careers – that we feel like we are making progress and moving forward. To feel this way at work you need to think about what the next step is for your career and how you can move up the company ladder. Make sure you’ve got prospects and it should feel less like you are working for nothing. A bit of a light at the end of the tunnel is a great motivator and mood-booster.

Avoid Pettiness

If you find that your colleagues are getting you down through squabbling and bickering, then avoid the office politics by rising above it. Don’t comment either way and you’ll find that you get left out of the drama. The more you speculate and comment the more it will backfire on you.

Don’t Take it to Heart

Whatever anyone says – the customer is not always right. In fact a lot of the time they are downright unreasonable. So don’t take it to heart when you get bad feedback, and recognise as well that it’s a reflection on the whole company – not solely your work.


If you are a boss or work in a team then don’t feel like you can’t occasionally delegate or lean on your co-workers. That’s what they’re there for and if you feel over worked then probably somewhere someone isn’t pulling their weight.

Understand the Business

Understanding how your organisation works rather than just understanding what you need to do in your job is an important way to get more appreciation for the way the business works and this can make your jobs seem more important – as well as helping you to work alongside colleagues better.

Improve Your Workspace

No matter what your business is like or your office, the space you’ll be working in most is your own cubical or desk space. Make sure then that this space is clean and tidy, nice to work in, spacious and personal.

Find Ways to Engage With Your Work

If you’re finding your job unrewarding or uninteresting then try and change the way you think about it. See how you can relate it back to skills that you are proud of and where possible use your own creativity to make it more interesting.


In some cases the anxiety will be outside of your control. In this case it’s crucial that you look to leave at any opportunity. Start applying for interviews elsewhere in your evening and then you will always have the option (and sometimes just the process of applying can feel like progress and help counter stress).

Put Money Aside

At the same time save some money aside as a safety net which can help prevent the worst case scenario from being too much of a problem. This way, if you were worried before that you might be about to lose your job, this can at least give you some assurance that you would be able to survive until you found alternative employment.
