Bromhexine Hydrochloride

Bromhexine hydrochloride is a medication prescribed for coughs which works by dissolving hard phlegm. This tends to be given to those with respiratory diseases who have difficulty coughing this out otherwise – by breaking it down it becomes smaller and easier to expel and this means they can breathe without their airways being blocked while also providing cough relief. It is preferable to some cough medication as it does not include any sedatives which can otherwise make those using the medication drowsy. At the same time many other cough medicines simply sooth the throat without actually breaking down the phlegm.

How Bromhexine Works

Bromhexine works by encouraging the body’s natural process for clearing mucus from the respiratory tract. It does this by increasing the production of serous mucus which is a thin type of mucus which dilutes the phlegm making it less hard and sticky. This also helps to ‘lubricate’ that hard phlegm which is already there – aiding the cilia (tiny hairs which line the respiratory tract) in sliding the phlegm out from the lungs. As well as being used on its own it is also included in a range of cough syrups.

Bromhexine Hydrochloride Side Effects

There are no known negative interactions with other medications. However it is recommended not to use the drug during pregnancy and particularly in the first three months, or if you are nursing children. At the same time there are some rare side effects that can occur and these include immune system disorders, skin disorders and respiratory disorders. In some rare cases skin lesions have been linked with the medication.

It is also worth noting that bromhexine hydrochloride includes lactose and thus it is not recommended for those with a lactose intolerance in which case many allergic reactions might be counted along the side effects.

There are side effects and I am allergic to it.

I have had tried three different cough mixtures with this in and they each have only this in common and I have the same bad reaction to each of them.

Thanks, I'm in a foreign country and needed an expectorant and not just a cough syrup.

This was very helpful to feel confident taking something I am not familiar with.

My physician prescribed to me this medication last year. And I’ve been using it since then. I say, it helps me aid the pain in my chest whenever I cough.

It helped me a lot on my cough, I am asthmatic and have mucus in my respiratory tract most of the time.
