Tomatoes as Remedy for Your Acne

There are scores of acne products on the market that claim that they will treat even the most severe cases. Amway products, Proactive products, dermatologist recommended products; there are so many products for acne that your body literally can’t handle them all! In addition to being developed in labs and laden with harsh chemicals, most acne products are expensive and have to be used on an ongoing basis in order for you to see any effects at all. Because of this, many people suffering from acne investigate natural and less expensive routes of treating acne prior to spending thirty to sixty dollars on a suite of products that may not even be FDA approved. Natural remedies are more readily accepted by the body except in the case of allergy than chemical derivatives used in lotions, pads and other acne cleansers. One prime source of proven acne relief stands no further away from you than your local produce store: the tomato is a solid fruit capable of clearing even bad cases of acne yet many people have yet to take advantage of this time-tested natural remedy.

First, a little bit of a description on why tomatoes are good for treating acne is in order. Tomatoes have antioxidant qualities. Antioxidants are frequently referenced as a great thing for human intake in fruits or medicines but often times people have no idea what they are. Put simply, antioxidants are molecules found naturally that fight against free-radicals; a free-radical is an unstable molecule that will bounce around between cells and damage them trying to rebalance itself into a stable molecule. Because tomatoes possess antioxidant qualities, their topical application can stop skin damage on the cellular level. In addition to being antioxidant rich, tomatoes have a high level of acidity inherent in their juice. This acidity will dry the skin when tomato products are applied to acne patches and tighten pores on your skin that leak oil which causes acne. This also helps to slow the eventuality or entirely stop break outs from happening. Lastly, tomatoes are vitamin rich. Tomatoes, according to Nutrition Data online, are an excellent source of vitamin C, A and K. Vitamins C and A are both used in most over the counter and prescription acne medications. In addition to A, C and K, tomatoes also contain vitamin E and some B vitamins as well. When all of these factors are considered, it’s a small wonder that there are no over the counter or prescription medications derived entirely of the tomato. Then again, considering how cheap and available tomatoes are on the market, large pharmaceutical companies aren’t able to price gauge their products if the cost of production is exceptionally low. Below are some recommended applications of tomatoes as treatment for acne. If you or a friend suffers from acne, try these first before running to the store or doctor’s office for about two weeks. Typically results show within one week if the application is done at least daily; the best results will ensue when topical application of tomatoes to acne affected areas is done twice a day.

Remedy Method # 1

The first method is as straightforward as it gets: take a tomato, cut it, and rub it on your face where the acne shows. This method isn’t as effective as some others that will be listed but for minor breakouts it could actually be preferred as it does not involve a lengthy amount of application time. All you do it cut the tomato in half, take half to the sink and smear the cut side against your face. Massage the tomato juice into the skin for a few seconds after application, and then you simply rinse it off with warm water.

Remedy Method # 2

A second method called the tomato facial mask is a lengthier process but it works well for even tough cases of acne. Get a tomato and cut an “X” at the top of it. Run the tomato under warm water for a minute or two, then peel the skin (which should come off rather easily after the warm water wash). Gut the tomato of seeds entirely then take the pulp that you have left and mash it up. Turn the pulp into tomato paste and once the paste is sufficiently smooth in consistency, apply as a facial mask over the entire face just as you would apply a cream facial mask. At this point you’ll need about an hour where you can hang about and just leave the mask on your face to harden and work its magic. After the full hour, rinse the mask off thoroughly.

Remedy Method # 3

Yet another way to use tomatoes in the treatment of acne is available for those who don’t feel comfortable leaving pulpy tomato on their face for an hour or for those that don’t like the idea of rubbing half of a tomato across their face. Simply take one tablespoon of tomato juice, mix it up with about three or four drops of lime juice in a small dish, then apply the mixture to your affected areas of acne with a cotton ball. This application needs to set for four or five minutes to be effective as the acidity in lime juice needs a bit more time than commonly featured over-the-counter ingredients like alcohol to dry out your skin but it works just as effectively given the full five minutes. Once the application has set for five minutes, rinse with warm water.

A variation to the tomato mask that works well and utilizes a vegetable with similar properties as the tomato is the tomato and cucumber mask. Cucumber has a moisturizing effect on flesh whereas the acidity in the tomato will shrink pores. Mash up the tomato as aforementioned and either add cucumber juice or mash a cucumber up into as smooth a paste as you can. Mix the two and also keep the mask on for a full hour. If the acne is painful, try adding two tablespoons of yoghurt to the paste mixture. This will soothe the pain.

  1. Well I've been using the first method and honestly I was kinda hopeful dermatology is my thing and I will be joining med school to start a major in it, honestly I do think tomatoes are very helpful and I think everybody should take the chance to recognize the benefits. I'm on my first week with this and I hope it pulls through 🙂

  2. Thank you for sharing this. It would help a lot specifically those who can't afford expensive anti-acne products. And I'm sure our skin will find this thousand times better 'cause it's natural.

By the way, i find your introduction really good.
