Folliculitis – Cure Your Folliculitis

Folliculitis describes an infection of one or several hair follicles which can occur anywhere around the body though is most common on the neck, axilla and groin regions. This will result in a red rash across the skin, pimples around the hair follicle, crustiness or itchiness. Usually this will occur as a result of the staphylococcus aureus bacteria which is the same bacteria that causes the MRSA ‘hospital bug’ which infects the follicle usually after it has been damaged. This damage in turn can be caused by friction caused by clothing, insect bites, blockages, incorrect shaving, tight braids that pull on the skin and other similar causes. In other cases though it can be caused by other bacteria and is often caused when sitting in an unclean hot tub for instance.

Most cases of folliculitis are mild and will clear up on their own after a few days. However in other cases it can be more severe and here it will require medication and treatment to clear up – if left, severe folliculitis can cause scarring and hair loss.

Folliculitis Home Remedies

However there are also some home remedies you can use which will speed up the improvement of your folliculitis. If you have a serious infection then you should still seek medical aid from a doctor but can use these strategies to supplement your treatment after speaking with them, if it is just a mild infection then you can use these strategies to help it improve more quickly.

Apply Warm Pressure: Use a warm compress which can be a cloth that you have run under hot water or some cotton wool and hold this onto the infected area.

Wash: You should wash the infected area regular using an anti-bacterial soap to kill off bacteria. You should also use a saline solution to disinfect the area so dab some cotton wool in some water mixed with salt and press this onto the area. If you make the saline solution warm then you can combine this step with the first step.

Use Hydrocortisone Cream: This will help to sooth the patch of skin which is itchy.

Use Oatmeal: You can make your own soothing cream by using a warm oatmeal lotion.

Wash Your Clothes: Anything that comes into contact with your skin such as cloths or your clothing you should wash thoroughly after use – otherwise you can transfer the bacteria back onto your skin.

Stop Shaving: You should also stop shaving the area where you have folliculitis as this can make matter worse. If you really must shave, then use an electric razor and use a soothing moisturiser afterwards.
