When you first bring your new baby home from the hospital there will be many things you will need to decide upon. One of them will be the type of diapers you will use. Believe it or not there are a large group of parents who have turned to the use of cloth diapers for a number of reasons. Most people think that the cloth diaper went out with the twist but this is just not the case. Today, more and more people are finding that cloth diapers are ideal for them in one way or another. However, with that being said there are also some people who find that using cloth diapers is not for them at all. Following are a list of pros and cons where using cloth diapers versus disposable diapers are concerned.

Pro: Cloth Diapers Are Better for the Environment

First and foremost cloth diapers are a much better choice in terms of being environmentally friendly. This is because they do not find up in the landfill like disposable diapers do. Many people feel that they cannot make a difference by themselves and as a result they choose not to do their part for the environment. However, if everyone took steps to benefit the environment then the world would be a much better place for our children. Cloth diapers are made of biodegradable material that will not harm the environment when they have reached the end of their lives. In addition, they are used for a much longer period of time as they are washed and reused many times before they are put out to pasture, so to speak.

Con: Cloth Diapers Are Less Convenient

Using cloth diapers is easy as using disposable diapers as there are more tasks involved with using them. With the disposable diaper you can simply tossed the paper in the trash once it has been used. Many parents enjoy this hassle-free method. You should call cloth diapers are also quite inconvenient when traveling on the road during vacations and family trips. This is especially true if there are no washing facilities available to you during your trip. Many parents who are avid users of cloth diapers still prefer disposable diapers when they are going to be away from their home for longer than a period of one day.

Pro: Cloth Diapers Are More Economical

Cloth diapers help parents eliminate the need to go out every week and purchase a new package of diapers. This can do a lot to help a family that is on a tight budget. Cloth diapers can be used many times over and for this reason are much more economical than disposable diapers. In addition, cloth diapers can also be used for subsequent siblings in the same line secondhand clothes can be used for a younger brother or sister. Many parents find this to be a great advantage, especially large families with a lot of children.

Con: Cloth Diapers Have a Higher Initial Investment

While cloth diapers are less expensive to use in the long run they can be quite costly to purchase. Some cloth diapers are as much as $15 a piece and many parents find this to be much higher than what their budget will allow. There are many people with today’s economy you are living from paycheck to paycheck and for this reason cannot make an investment like this. However, it is possible to purchase three or four diapers in the beginning and just wash them more often. If upfront investment is an issue than cloth diapers may not be the best option for these parents. There are also cloth diaper services that are available. The way they work is that they drop off a clean bundle of diapers on a specific day and when they are also loyal picks them up and replace them. Obviously, this is a much more expensive option than purchasing and washing your own cloth diapers.

Pro: Cloth Diapers Are Healthier for Baby’s Skin

Even though there are many brands of disposable diapers that are said to be hypoallergenic they are still made with many chemicals that could be harmful to your baby’s skin. Cloth diapers on the other hand are made of soft 100% cotton material that will not aggravate your baby’s skin in the slightest. Provided you use the right kind of detergent, cloth diapers will be a much gentler option to your baby’s sensitive skin. There are even some studies that show the material in disposable diapers used for absorbency contains trace amounts of carcinogens.

Con: Cloth Diapers Need to Be Changed More Often

Because cloth diapers are natural and contain nothing to help keep moisture away from your baby’s skin they must be changed more often than disposable diapers. In addition, cloth diapers can leak a bit easier than disposables so a parent who is using cloth diapers will need to make sure the diaper is put on properly and that it is checked often for wetness. There is also the fact that they are a bit messier to use as bowel movements will have to be removed and placed in the trash. With disposable diapers the whole diaper, bowel movement and all is simply thrown in the trash.

There are many different styles of cloth diapers available. These days they are being created in a variety of colors and patterns, making them an even more attractive option for parents. For girls it is possible to buy beautiful floral patterns and for boys you can find a number of styles such as super hero themes and much more. Using cloth diapers is an overall good choice and most of the complaints people have are based on issues of convenience. If you have the time and inclination to use cloth diapers you will be doing your baby a favor, as well as the environment.

Good article, but inaccurate when it comes to wetness against baby's skin. Article states there is nothing to keep wetness away for baby's skin. In reality, cloth diapers have either a micro fleece or suede cloth liner that wicks moisture away from baby's skin.
