Prostate problems affect many men and can be a serious worry as well as an irritation which can cause frequent urination, blood in the urine, difficulty urinating and a range of other problems. As such, many men turn to prostate supplements for an answer.
Prostate supplements are not actually designed to cure prostate cancer nor other prostate conditions. Rather the intention is to improve the health of the gland and the body in general and thereby to decrease the chances of developing these problems initially and can aid your body slightly in dealing with the conditions once they develop.
If you have a prostate condition such as prostate cancer, then it is important to see a professional GP who can prescribe medication and discuss other treatment options – you will not be able to counter these conditions with prostate supplements that you buy over the shelf. The ingredients found in these supplements are more likely to be herbs, vitamins and other nutrients that are found in your diet anyway – they can help you to maintain good health without needing the understanding or the time to get those ingredients yourself, but they do not offer a cure nor any guarantee against any prostate conditions.
What’s in Prostate Supplements?
The most common ingredients found in prostate supplements are generally herbs such as saw palmetto and pygeum. Saw palmetto has been demonstrated in some studies to be effective at combating an enlarged prostate which it achieves by minimizing the production of DHT while minimizing the production of estrogen. Meanwhile pygeum is also a herbal supplement ingredient which is used in the treatment of prostatitis and benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate).
Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants
Other ingredients in many of these supplements include general vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These promote general health and are designed to help prevent cancer in general while aiding the body’s ability to defend itself.
Vitamins such as vitamin C for instance boost the body’s natural immune system thereby helping it to fend off various conditions such as infections. At the same time antioxidants are substances that help to prevent the existence of free radicals in the body – chemicals that can cause damage to cells on impact and which over time can batter through cell walls and damage the DNA thus causing mutations that can lead to cancerous cells. Antioxidants then are believed to help prevent cancer in general. We can get these from grapes, oily fish, meats and many other sources.
In terms of minerals, zinc has been demonstrated to be successful in preventing prostate problems. Men lose zinc when they ejaculate and by consuming zinc-based supplements they can improve their hormone balance thus aiding healthy prostates. Balances of zinc and magnesium called ZMA are also thought to help increase testosterone.
Some soy products are thought to help the body to fight cancer due to the presence of genistein and isoflavinoids and these too are commonly used in prostate supplements.
