Will My Lip Piercing Hole Close?

If you’re into body modifications, piercings and tattoos, then a lip piercing can look great and be a great way to draw attention to your lips, and to add some jewelry to your face. There are lots of lip studs and rings you can get and any of these can look attractive and even add another element while kissing. The question is though, what will they look like when they’re not in? Will the piercing close up? How quickly? And will it leave a scar when you do want it to heel?

How Long Does it Take for a Piercing to Close Up?

Generally it will take around three months for a piercing to close up, and this may prove to be just slightly faster for a lip piercing as lip piercings are notorious for closing very quickly. Thus if you want your lip piercing to completely close, then you need to just leave the ring out for this amount of time.

However do bear in mind that this is only true after you’ve had the piercing for a time. After you’ve first had the piercing you will need to leave it time to heal around the piercing, and failure to do so will mean that your lip closes over very quickly – even within a few hours. This process takes around six months, so when you first have your piercing put in it is important to leave the bar in for the first six months so that it stays.

If you need to take it out for work, then find out if you can put some blue tape over it rather than remove it completely. Otherwise just be sure to put it back in as soon as you get back. After the first six months you’ll be able to leave the ring out for a few days at a time and won’t need to worry.

What Will Be Left Afterward?

A concern for many people getting any kind of piercing is of course that it may leave a scar. This is an understandable concern, but you shouldn’t worry when you have a lip piercing which will tend to leave a tiny dot at first that will fade away to nothing.

However this does depend on the size of the hole, which itself depends on the gauge used. If you had larger than the standard 14g then this may leave some slight scarring, and it may also affect your skin’s elasticity.

If you are a little concerned about scarring and you want it to disappear more quickly there are some things you can do. Try using an anti-scarring cream or a moisturizer with vitamin E in it. Alternatively use something more specialist such as BioOil. You may also find that it helps to bleach the skin with a little lemon juice which will fade the appearance of the scar.

Looking After Your Piercing

While there should not be any scarring, this is true only if you take good care of your piercing. If you are to get infected then this can cause tissue damage and that in turn will mean that you scar and don’t heal as well.

To avoid infection it is important to keep a close eye on your piercing and to keep it clean. You can use a saline solution here and dab it onto the hole to fight the infection, or you can use a disinfectant cream. Make sure to wash your hole regularly, and avoid touching it overly.

  5. Oof, I have had my first lip piercing since 2015 and my second one since 2016 so, depending on my skin I can take it out for a few hours for work and still be able to put it back in?

  6. I took out my lip ring because the lady didn’t do it right, and my lip kept getting bigger. So I took it out the swelling went down, but I feel a little ball in my lip where the piercing was. Can you please help me know what it is? Thank you!

  7. So I was wondering if the hole would ever close completely. I had my lip ring in for a solid decade, then had to get rid of it for the military. I just recently got a 20g ring through with no issues and this was after not wearing it for 4+ years. If you had your lip pierced for long enough, I think it’s safe to say that hole may never close all the way, just get smaller (which was good news for me because I plan on wearing it again once I’m out).
