Home Remedies for Strep Throat

Strep throat is caused by the infection of a Group A bacterium called streptococcus and it is often confused with sore throat and tonsilitis. Strep throat can develop into sore throat, but not always. Tonsilitis happens when the tonsil is reddened, inflamed and become sore. This term doesn’t define an infection but it is used collectively for any tonsils inflammation. This disease can happen to anyone. Home Remedies for Strep Throat

Cayenne Pepper

You can use cayenne pepper to treat your strep throat. There are a couple of ways you can do to prepare cayenne pepper for strep throat.

1) Prepare 4 tablespoonful of cayenne pepper, sixteen pressed cloves of garlic and one teaspoonful of cayenne pepper. Mix all ingredients and take 1/2 teaspoonful every half an hour. Don’t drink any water; you should let the mixture to coat your throat. Cayenne is also wonderful for boosting your immune system and the garlic will help you to eliminate the bacteria. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can make you feel better quickly, as well. Prepare one tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar and 8 oz of water, and mix them. Obviously, this treatment is more comfortable compared to cayenne pepper treatment.


By sucking on lozenges, you can immediately ease the pain in your throat. Lozenges can keep your throat moist and stimulate the saliva production. To avoid irritation, use only herbal-based lozenges.

Lemon and Honey

A combination of lemon and honey can provide a tasty relief to your throat. Add honey and lemon, one tablespoonful each to a glass of hot water. Allow the glass to cool down and sip when it’s warm. Repeat if necessary.

Gargling Salt Water

Gargling warm salt water is an effective and simple remedy for treating strep throat. Stir one teaspoonful of water into a small cup filled with warm water. Gargle the mixture every 4 hours if necessary.


Boil half teaspoonful of cinnamon in one cup of water for ten minutes. When the cup is warm, add one teaspoonful of honey. Drink the mixture 3 or 4 times each day. It will give you an instant relief, by soothing an itchy throat.


Garlic can be taken at its own if you have bacterial infections in your throat. It is a potent natural antibiotic and can help to cure your strep throat. It will also help speed up your recovery process.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is very soothing and relaxing; take it 3-4 times a day if you have strep throat.

Mentholated Salve

If your child has strep throat, rub a natural salve, such as mentholated salve onto the throat and chest. The warmth can help your child to breathe better and feel more relaxed. You can combine it with a steam treatment. Add some eucalyptus or mentholated salve to a bowl of very hot water. Ask your child to inhale the steam. Both methods can significantly soothe the throat and chest, making your child sleep easier.


Belladonna is often used when treating strep throat. This herb may ameliorate fever, decongest airways and reduce inflammation. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, you can have a good alternative to antibiotics.

Slippery Elm Bark or Sage Leaf Tea

    Did you mean 4 Tbs of Honey?

  4. While these may help with the symptoms of strep throat, I highly doubt they can kill the bacteria and cure the individual of the illness. Additionally, if not fully cured, the bacteria can attack the heart. That's why taking a full dose of antibiotics is the recommended method of treatment.
