Why Some Guys Wear Jumpers in the Gym

When I first started out in the gym I remember it feeling as though I’d landed on an alien planet. This place was full of strange customs and people and I really had no idea what I was doing. There were some pretty unusual characters hanging around in some of the darker corners of the room, and in general it was all pretty intimidating. These days I consider the gym to be my second home however… How times have changed!

One thing I remember being particularly perplexed by back then, was the way that some of the guys in there would train wearing hugely thick jumpers. This was strange to me seeing as I was usually turning up in tank tops that would show off my then-weedy arms. But stranger still was that it tended to be the very biggest and strongest guys who wore the thick jumpers. Was there a correlation here? Perhaps you’ve noticed the same thing…

The Role of the Jumper

So why wear a big thick jumper at the gym? Well, one reason is that it causes you to sweat more, which in turn means you burn more energy. Contrary to popular belief, exercise isn’t the only way to burn calories – its basic thermodynamics. If your body is getting really hot or getting really cold, then it will burn energy in the process trying to put things back to normal. Thus, by putting on a big thick jumper you can actually improve your workout. Some people go as far as to wear shiny outfits that are designed to promote sweating and heat. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going that far, but even just wearing a jumper can prove enough to make some difference.

Another benefit of big jumpers is that they provide protection. Protection from what? From the weights and the machines of course. If you’re going to be squatting huge amounts of weight that rest on your shoulders, then having a thick jumper across said shoulders is understandably not a bad move.

Likewise, if you’re going to be using the rowing machine with your chest pressed up against the pad, this can be quite painful unless you have a thick jumper in the way.

Anyway, wearing a massive jumper and still looking like a pro bodybuilder is just cool.
