How to Get the Most From Your Fitness Tracker

Fitness trackers are all the rage right now and it seems like more and more are springing up all the time. These of course are the watches, wrist bands and other devices that track your steps, calories and in some cases heart rate as well.

But the question is: do you really need one? And can they actually be any use?

The answer is yes, but it depends on how you’re using it and whether you’re making the effort to act on the information it gives you.

Data Isn’t Enough

What you need to understand about fitness trackers is that they don’t do any good unless you’re willing to put in the time and effort to act on the data they deliver. Data on its own is useful, but it won’t change your shape unless you actually know how to take action and act according to what that data is saying.

So if you’re tracking the number of calories you’re burning in a day, you then have to actually act on that information by making sure you’re eating fewer calories than that in order to lose the weight.

Likewise, it’s not good enough to simply monitor your steps – you need to look at the times and days where you’re not taking enough and then find ways to improve your total each week so that you can burn more calories and more fat.

Using a fitness tracker you can get a rough estimate for how many calories you’re burning in a day and at which points you’re failing to burn more. This information can be invaluable for losing weight but you need to actually act on it.

Likewise, getting information about your runs is a fantastic way to make them more rewarding and to set out with specific challenges and targets to beat. Again though, you have to actually go running to get that benefit!

The Bottom Line

Ultimately then, a fitness tracker on its own is not enough to change your life. That said though, if you can act on that data in order to start changing the numbers, then it will be useful.

Just don’t be that person who buys a tracker almost as a way to ‘put off’ actually putting in the work. Just buying a tracker and wearing one isn’t the positive step you need.

Ultimately, this is a great tool – you just need to make sure you’re also making the most from it!
