Blood Blister Home Treatments

A blood blister is a rather unsightly black lump that often appears on the tips of our fingers after we’ve trapped them in a zipper or otherwise pinched the flesh in some way. These occur as a result of damage to the blood vessels under the surface. This causes internal bleeding which eventually builds into a dark bump. Not only do they look unpleasant but they can also be painful and make simple things like typing frustratingly difficult.

Fortunately, blood blisters are not serious and will normally heal on their own. What’s more, is that there are a number of ways you can encourage more rapid recovery in order to get back full use of your fingertips.

What Not to Do

One thing you mustn’t do to get rid of a blood blister is attempt to burst it. Not only can this cause a lot of bleeding but it can also lead to infections and other complications. As tempting as it may be, you shouldn’t treat a blood blister like a pimple or a boil!

What You Can Do

What you can do though is to apply an ice wrap a soon as possible. The cold temperature will help to cause vasoconstriction – encouraging the blood vessels to shrink which will in turn reduce the amount of swelling and internal bleeding. Don’t apply the ice directly to the skin but wrap it in a cloth or other material for insulation. Keep this in place for about 10 minutes at a time.

Another useful treatment is witch hazel. This contains astringent tannins to both act as an analgesic and dry out the blood blister. This can also help to reduce inflammation and minimize the likelihood of infection. Aloe Vera can also be useful, as can sandalwood essential oil.

Really though, the best treatment for blood blisters is time. Try to avoid using that finger as much as possible and be patient – it will leave of its own accord!
