Antiperspirant VS. Deodorant: Which One Really Works?

So, you’re on a quest to find out what the difference is between antiperspirant and deodorant. Perhaps your under arms are irritated or maybe you’re having trouble trying to find an antiperspirant/deodorant that actually works. Well, this article won’t tell you what brand is the best unfortunately because everyone’s skin type is different, etc. However, this article will help you to understand the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant, as well as giving you a list of brands that do sell plain and simple deodorant.

Just what exactly is the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant anyway?

Many of you are probably expecting a somewhat complex answer to this, however the answer is quite simple. Antiperspirant blocks the pores that release sweat, and deodorant simply stops the body odor that can be easily smelled when we sweat a lot. Antiperspirant stops the sweating with two main ingredients, aluminium and zirconium, which block the pores. Though deodorant stops the smell of sweat your under arms will still become wet since deodorant does not block your pores.

Depending on the type of person you are depends on whether or not you would prefer antiperspirant or deodorant. Both antiperspirant and deodorant work, they just work in two completely different ways. So, for people who do not like to feel wet under their arms the best bet would probably be antiperspirant, while deodorant would be best for people who do not feel comfortable with having a product clog their pores under their arms.

Deodorants are fairly hard to find unless you know what you’re looking for. When looking at deodorants do not choose one that says, “antiperspirant/deodorant” on the bottle. Instead choose deodorant that only says, “deodorant” on the bottle.

The following list is a list of brand names that carry deodorant:

  • Old Spice
  • Tom’s of Maine

  1. So glad when I come across articles that make the distinction between deodorants and antiperspirants! For years I have refused to use antiperspirants, given how bad the aluminum content is for you! There are a bunch of natural deodorants out there but I think Lavilin beats them all. Alcohol- and aluminum-free, and lasts up to 7 days. Other brands have similar effects, but I think Lavilin is superior. They recently introduced a roll-on deodorant too, which is easier to use than the cream. Highly recommended!
